#99 Lance Hohaia

The Huntly Hurricane is coaching rugby at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA...

Lance Hohaia.webp

Lance Hohaia joined the Aquinas Athletic Department in the winter of 2021 and serves as the head coach of the AQ men's rugby program. Hohaia was hired as the inaugural head coach of the program.

After an inaugural spring season in 2022 where the Saints finished with a 4-5 record, AQ completed a full 2022-23 campaign with a 11-12 record and competed in the program's first Collegiate 7s National Championship tournament in Washington, D.C. The Saints went 2-2 on the national stage with wins over Iona and Michigan.

The Saints continued to improve in the 2023-24 season. Aquinas went 10-9 overall and finished in fifth-place in the first Big Rivers Conference Tournament with wins over Rio Grande and Iowa Central CC. AQ then qualified for the Collegiate 7s National Championship tournament once again and made it all the way to the championship game in the Premier Bowl.

Prior to coming to Aquinas, Hohaia had a two-year coaching stint at nearby Davenport. He led the 2018-19 Panthers to an 18-8 record in his first season, which was an eight-win improvement from the previous year. That season, Davenport was ranked as high as eighth in the country. The 2019 7's team qualified for the 7's National Championships and had a strong showing at the national tournament, capturing the bronze medal.

Hohaia played for the New Zealand national team from 2002 to 2011 and helped the team win the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He also helped New Zealand win the 2005 Tri Nations championship and capture the 2010 Four Nations championship.

Nicknamed "The Huntly Hurricane" by the media after growing up in the town of Huntly, he played in over 300 matches in his 15-year professional career. Hohaia competed for 11 seasons with the New Zealand Warriors and is one of only six players in club history to spend 10 consecutive seasons with the Warriors. He closed his professional career by playing four years for St. Helens RFC in the United Kingdom and helped the team win the 2014 Super League championship.

Hohaia has an Associate in Applied Management from the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, a Bachelor's of Business also from the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, and is working on his Master.s of Management program at Massey University in New Zealand, to be completed in November 2026.

When he is not coaching rugby at Aquinas, Lance enjoys playing golf, mountain biking, traveling (exploring new places and cultures), dining out and trying new foods as a foodie, hiking, going on adventures with his two boys, watching rugby, and working out.

#104 Mark Robinson

Our last known whereabouts in 2015 for Mark was company director of Klas Consultancy in the UK but that company was wound down in 2018. Unfortunately internet archives have no record of our update in 2023 but I can only assume it was met with the same dead end we find ourselves at now with searches for Mark becoming impossible with most hits referring to former NZ Rugby CEO and also our current owner who both share the same common name.

IF ANYONE HAS AN UPDATE FOR MARK ROBINSON PLEASE LET US KNOW...

UPDATE

We have managed to track Mark down. He is Head of Investor Relations ad Capital Deployment at Yolo Investments. Yolo Investments is a venture capital firm focused on series A stage investments across fintech, crypto and igaming.

Last time we did an update he hadn't included his stint at the Warriors but that's since been rectified but interestingly there is no mention of Klas Investments...

Wigan Warriors announced that Club Captain Thomas Leuluai will retire at the end of the 2022 season and become Assistant Coach for 2023 and beyond.

After 20 years seasons as a Rugby League professional, Leuluai, 37, will hang up his boots following the conclusion of this campaign. Leuluai is due to return from injury and is set to feature for Wigan before the end of the season, as he looks to end his career in pursuit of a third Betfred Super League Grand Final trophy.

He will become Assistant Coach and join Head Coach Matt Peet and former teammate and also Assistant Coach Sean O’Loughlin on the Coaching Team. Leuluai will lead out New Zealand in their World Cup warm-up match against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley Stadium on Saturday 8th October. He will represent his country for one final time, before joining the Coaching Team for the tournament.

#111 Danny Sullivan

Every update we have done had Danny working as a head groundsman at Hunter Stadium which is now McDonalds Jones Stadium. Unfortunately I cant find a single thing about this now with even the links to past stories no longer active. This is a great example of why I like to post whole stories instead of just links because whoever said the internet doesnt forget was a liar. Below is the article we posted in the 2015 update that I scraped from Wayback Machine archives...

Former NZ Warriors star Manu Vatuvei moving on from drug conviction

Former NZ Warriors star Manu Vatuvei says he will carry the shame of his drug conviction for the rest of his life.

While Vatuvei is ready to move on from his time in prison, he understands the public are much less forgiving.

In a brutal fall from grace, the Kiwi league legend was convicted for importing $200,000 of methamphetamine from India in 2022.

He was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison, but was paroled under special conditions in May 2023.

Once adored by the New Zealand public, “The Beast” forfeited years of goodwill built up through his record-breaking feats, as well as winning Dancing with the Stars in 2019.

“I don’t wish what I went through upon anyone,” he said. “Bouncing back from where I was before, it was hard.

“You have some good people that will be there to support me, and there will be those people that dislike me because of what I did, but that’s part of it.

“I take ownership of what I did and I’m accountable for it, and now I’m changing my life again and rebuilding from the start. I’ve been there before, rebuilding myself, so I can do it again.”

Vatuvei said he continued to carry the weight of his decisions.

“I’m ready to move forward, but it’ll always be on me, everything that I’ve done. At the end of the day, I just use that as fuel to make me work harder to rebuild again.

“All the hate that I get, I’ll just use that as energy to show that I’m doing something good.”

Vatuvei is trying to use his experience to encourage other rugby league players to speak out when struggling with mental health. He admitted having suicidal thoughts as his name was dragged through the mud.

“We don’t show how hurt we are or if we’ve got an injury, we just keep playing. We don’t want to show the opponent that we’re hurt, then they’ll keep targeting us, so we don’t want to be that weak link in there.”

He implored players not to suffer in silence.

“If there’s something wrong, you will have someone there that you could talk to and support you. I did, but I was old-school way, just ‘get over it and keep moving forward’.

“Eventually, it just got worse and it caught up with me.”

Vatuvei has used his time after prison working alongside Dave Letele’s Buttabean Motivation (BBM) team.

“I help a lot of people through training and, for what we do with David, I owe him a lot. He never looked down at me or anything.

“He just took me under his wing and gave me the opportunity, but then it was up to me to work my arse off. He just opened the door, and then I just had to walk in and make the move.

“Now I’m just working hard and giving back to our community again, sharing my story with the people I train, because they go through a lot with mental battles.

“I’ve been through mental battles too, so I’m just happy that I can show support in that way.”

Vatuvei has also engaged in public speaking, particularly to youth about taking wrong paths.

“I’m just trying to rebuild and find opportunities elsewhere ... just do what’s given to me and hopefully do something positive.”

Vatuvei did try to get back into playing last year, but his body would not allow it.

“I’ve been away from the game for a while now. I tried to play some grassroots footy for my club and I just kept getting injured.

“I had hamstring problems and then I dislocated my shoulder on my last game, so it just says that my body has had enough, now it’s just time for me to move on with life.

“I was still hanging on to it, I still had hopes, but after that, it was time to hang it up and focus on my family and focus on something to provide for them.”
