I'd prefer to learn that we won before any other lessons, Gagai looked very dangerous v Melbourne B, Webby must be more confident Pomps can handle him.
The guy owned Croker on his 300th in canberra, he's at home against the Knights.

We were all okay with Tuaupiki playing with RTS in the team. I think it's a gamble with taking.

still nuts that our 3rd choice fullback is our dally m winning fullback from 2018. Many teams would give their right nut for that kind of depth. Pompey will do a job: he will want to prove to webby that he still has a role to play here. He has silky ball skills and is a solid defender. He also contained Gagai well in the final last year. Ali will get his time soon but Pompey is the obvious choice for mine here.

Man I know I harp on about it but I think it's the wrong decision to play Pompey over Leiataua unless Leiataua can only play one side?

This was a perfect opportunity to play Leiataua against Gagai, this position is for only one game and we won't learn anything with pompey.

Leiataua only needs a handful of games a year and who's to say after this week we see pompey or Leiataua again in first grade this season.

Missed a trick to set a recon mission this week. I'm happy enough that pompey is playing but we won't learn anything.

I understand where you are coming from but I don't actually think there are things to learn.

We have a dominant game plan that's only being partly executed

Going to the guy that played every game last year is the right move for what is simply a must win game.

Also can't overstate enough the value of competition for spots.

A fair amount of commentary about why the Panthers are so good is that basically, every defensive shape, every attacking shape, every idea is fed into every grade team from bottom to top. So when the NRL 7 can't make the game, the NSW 7 knows what he needs to do within the NRL Team's structure. Maybe he won't do it as fast or as 100% correct as Mr Cleary, maybe some work gets shovelled on to Mr Luai becuase it's the NSW 7, but he won't look like he doesn't have a clue, either.
This is where the Warriors need to get to - as unromantic and boring (Less Razzle Dazzle! No Off The Cuff Monkeys In The Trees Throwing Bananas! as some twat ARL/NRL commentator once called it) as it might sound, frankly. If Pompey is more on-song with the structures he needs to play in the NRL, than he's the one who I'd give the call-up to. Maybe I'd give it to Ali if we were on a winning run and looking like we're really firing, but that we are not at present...

Not sure why everyone is so concerned with Ali’s D (No Diddy)
From what I’ve seen he’s very good! Not perfect but neither was Pompey in the All Stars game.
Others may have seen him play more though….

You can't judge Pompey on the All Stars game. First game of the season at rep intensity against a backline of the fastest players in the comp. As others have said, at this point in the season you go for experience as teams are still full of beans and the matches are grinds. Save putting Ali in for when the team is running hot and let him get FG confidence.
Money on Pompey scoring on an unders crash ball from Metcalf, then we'll have a selection conundrum on our hands.

Good to see Niukore named. That last trial showed some promise for him coming off the bench in the middle.

I've seen they announced the team with injured trio back.

Walker we didn't get much on the severity of his injury. He did go down grabbing his ankle in the Storm game so in hindsight him missing last week isn't surprising. As he has been playing most weeks the injured trio you immediately think it is guys who have been missing for an extended period.

Egan has been named every week so I'll curb my excitement until we get to the point it is too late for him to be pulled. Then wait nervously for him to finish the game or the minutes they decide to have him out there for.

Everyone is judging Leiataua on the trials! 🤣

Not sure where to put this with the preseason thread being closed and this clip only just popping up on my feed.

Exciting to hear Jacob laban with an endorsement from a few boys, and Metcalf saying Jacob is the hardest to tackle and hardest trainer, no wonder he has come flying out of the blocks.

Nice list, Freddy, Luke, Roger, Jacob, and Ali.

Can see why Jacob got so much trial time, why Freddy may find a spot made for him on that bench.

More compelling that Metcalf got the nod, Roger we all can see how hard he has worked.

Seems the boys who trained hardest get recognition in extended teams on team naming Tuesdays.

I dunno if I buy into the mind games of team naming anymore.

If we plebs can see through them, then what use are they at affecting other NRL coaches, who lets face it, are experts way above any of us and have seen it all before.

There may have been a time where coaches played a bit of Sun Tzu "Appear Strong when you are weak"....but how effective is that really?

I expect good coaches would analyse video of every possible line up they face.

The way I interpret this team naming is that Webster is going with his preferred line up.

If Webster named the players on the fringes (18-22) as starters, then drops them on game day, I think that would send the wrong message to those players, bit of a let down having built yourself up all week as a good chance of playing.

Some will say you should train like you expect to play anyway, but if the coach is playing mind games, then after pulling that stunt a few times, players would work it out for themselves, therefore being named in the seventeen would be tarnished, have less meaning, and therefore less incentive to dare to dream you are gonna be out there in front of friends and family.

I just think there is a slightly better chance than not, that all the crook players are gonna turn out as named and therefore Webster is just getting on with it and sending clear messaging to his squad.

I may be wrong, you might be right, it would be a great question for someone like @Fonzie to ask Andrew Webster. "Do NRL coaches play mind games with team naming? Do you believe it serves a function?

Toohey's News: why Knights need to awaken the giant against Warriors

Barry Toohey: He played just 30 minutes of last Sunday's win.

Says we need to "awaken the giant" to beat the Warriors - Daniel Saifiti.

Says Pryce needs to work on his defence but showed great signs in attack in reserves.

Says Fletcher Sharpe started last week by impersonating Papenhausen at Knights training, even wearing the headband, but ended the week in hospital on antibiotics for "infected boils."

Says we are no closer to filling our 30th roster spot - Oates is off the table.

Says Hastings couldn't have done more in reserves

Hospital for boils is unusual, but not unheard of.

Poor bugger must have had a boil or boils in dangerous spots like on a nut or around the eyes etc.

Gee his immune system must be trash to get a plague of boils. Dude seriously needs to look at his diet, his sleep, and his stress management.

Excuse the diversion, Saifiti is indeed a beast when he fires up, in a way it would be good to see because some of our boys could do with a slap in the face too...in a good way....
