Wendy’s New Zealand bought by US giant, ending West Auckland family’s 35-year run

Wendy’s NZ has been bought by American franchise operating giant Flynn Group for an undisclosed sum.

The American burger franchise was put up for sale in 2022 by West Auckland family the Lendichs, who have operated the business since 1988.

Flynn Group, which is the largest franchise operator in the world, announced today the acquisition of Wendco (NZ) – the sole franchisee of the Wendy’s brand in New Zealand.

Wendy’s has more than 20 restaurants employing 500 staff in New Zealand.

Flynn Group has been expanding its international presence over the past year, including purchasing the master license for Wendy’s and Pizza Hut in Australia.

The group owns and operates more than 2700 consumer-facing businesses across Applebee’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and Planet Fitness in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

“The acquisition of the Wendy’s New Zealand business represented a compelling opportunity to continue our growth ambitions internationally and to expand our strong partnership with the much-loved Wendy’s brand,” Flynn Group chief operating officer Ron Bellamy said.

“Wendco New Zealand has a proud 35-year track record of delighting customers, and we are honoured to carry that tradition forward.

“Our immediate priority will be to collaborate with the existing team to determine how we can best leverage our scale and capabilities to build on their success as we enter this next chapter of growth together.”

Danny and Dianne Lendich started Wendy’s in New Zealand in 1988 and daughter Danielle is the chief executive.

Danielle will continue to support the business through the transition as an advisor to Flynn Group, a spokeswoman told the Herald.

Danielle, who has been working in the business for the last 25 years, told the Herald in 2022 that she was open to staying on within the business, either in a chief executive, board or management role.

“The business is in a really good place for someone else to come along and grow the brand in New Zealand and possibly further afield,” she said at the time.

Phil Reed will step into the role of President for Flynn ANZ, overseeing operations in both Australia and New Zealand.

“We now have multiple brands across two key markets and see a clear opportunity to build on an already strong foundation established by the Lendich family and the talented team at Wendy’s New Zealand,” Reed said.

Can't see the Wendys sponsorship going on much longer with this happening?

I still exclusively call Bricohe "breochary" after that advert with Konnie and Manu years ago, and will continue to do so regardless though lol

TAB recommits as partner until end of 2029 season

Long standing partner TAB has recommitted to the One New Zealand Warriors through to the end of the 2029 NRL season.

The five-year renewal sees the organisation continue its support of the popular game day hub the TAB Clubrooms in the East Stand.

The venue was jam-packed throughout a year in which the One New Zealand Warriors pre-sold every hospitality offering for all 10 games at Go Media Stadium months in advance of the season starting.

“We couldn’t have been more delighted with the incredible support the One New Zealand Warriors received at Go Media Stadium this year,” said Cameron Rodger, Managing Director New Zealand of Entain Australia and New Zealand, the operators of TAB.

“The energy and experience of a game day in the TAB Clubrooms is exceptional as is the whole experience of a home game at the stadium. We love being part of it.”

The partnership brings together two iconic New Zealand brands with a shared goal of providing superior game day experiences for members and fans.

“TAB has been part of our fabric since the outset in 1995,” said One New Zealand Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“And here they are entering our 30th anniversary season by reinforcing their commitment to this great club for another five years.

“We really appreciate the key part they play in making our game days at Go Media Stadium the best of any sport in New Zealand.”

The partnership with TAB also incorporates signage at home games in New Zealand as well as player appearances and social media opportunities.

Here’s an interesting article about revenue across the league this past season.
Incredibly The Dolphins topped revenue earnings. Although The Wah’s were down the list with $11 mill, their GP at 62% was one of the best.

The comments from Terry Reader CEO of The Dolphins hopefully gives any new Christchurch franchise optimism in committing new partners too.

Semi-related, but I see Huddersfield is sponsored by Autex.. I imagine it is something like Mohawks old man was a big Giants fan back in the day, but just wondering if there is maybe something more to it than that?

As far as I know, the only other team to have the Autex sponsorship, besides us and Pt Chev ofc, was the Dolphins Cup team the year we had our partnership with them, is all.
