One of six players at the New Zealand Warriors who run off-contract at the end of the 2026 season, Tanah Boyd’s future has been clouded for some time as he prepares to make a decision in the coming months.

While he could very easily attract a ton of interest from rival teams such as the St George Illawarra Dragons, recent reports have revealed that his preference is to remain at the Warriors.
This comes as veteran journalist Brent Read stated that the Warriors have opened contract negotiations with the playmaker on a new deal.

If extended, that means it is highly likely that either Chanel Harris-Tavita or Te Maire Martin will be pushed out of the club due to them having a plethora of halves on their books such as Luke Metcalf, Luke Hanson, Jye Linnane and Jett Cleary.

“I think Tanah Boyd wants to stay at the Warriors. That’s his preference, and that’s who they're negotiating with at the moment,” Code Sports’ Brent Read said on Triple M’s NRL Daily.

“He will only move if that deal won’t get done.

David Riccio added, “I think you’re right about the Warriors. Tanah Boyd knocked back a return to the Titans 18 months ago, while playing NSW Cup.”

Boyd is the one we need the most, this is the one. More important than anyone we could recruit realistically externally.

It is weird though, how the grass on your side gets taken for granted (it does in my mind) more than news of shiny new trinkets from Oz.

I feel that people undervalue job satisfaction.

Coming into a work situation that has you performing near the pinnacle of your field can weigh heavily on these players minds. Especially the ones who've had a hard start to their careers (Jacko, Boyd, Metcalf...etc.)

I mean, fuck, it's not like these Aussies are moving to a third world country.

If it's true and Boyd wants to stay, I hope we don't mess it up.

Money matters, but guys also like winning, as long as the deal is fair, surely playing around a pack and team going well is a big draw card.

It would not surprise me to see both CHT and Boyd sign back on. Going to be tight though as if he got a mega offer elsewhere then thats a different challenge.

I feel like CHT would be okay with slotting in anywhere needed.

I think CHT in a 13 jersey would be okay. Move Clark to front row and keep Vaimauga on the bench for the time being.

The difference between 800k and 1 million is massive, you'd be silly to turn a difference like that down. Yet, moving to the Dragons and being a scapegoat for poor performance vs being an important cog in a premiership team will have very different ramifications on your future earnings.

I still don't think clubs will see Boyd as a proven product, but despite that his market rate will be higher than the club will be comfortable with. It might take the lower-end of market rate to get him to stay. What might that be? 750k?

I reckon Boyd would be in a similar boat to Fogarty so within the 550-650k range. Not quite at that big money level yet. Thats not to say other clubs wouldnt offer him 750k+

Timing is everything for a player to maximize their earning.

The smart play financially could be a one year extension here and then off to PNG with their tax advantages. Although thats probably the worst option in terms of footballing.

I'm not saying his a mid tier player. I'm just saying that he might be aware of the situation hes in and the football it's allowing him to play.

He might just go for a 2 year deal. When he is off that he will hopefully be a premiership winning half back and only 28. He would then get a very good long term offer.

I agree. If we're keen on him, we should hurry up. I guess that's the art of the negotiation, don't let them know how valuable they are to you until you're forced to. Metcalfe. If Metcalfe went FB, I reckon we'd have the right balance.
