That has nothing to do with taxes

If it's anything going and working in any other tax free country (like the UAE), you have to have lived out of NZ for 325+ days.

So I think(?) it will come down to PNG and whether or not the $600m injection covers all NRL players, or just the Australian ones.

Best I can make of it it's up to PNG and whether or not they want to tax NZ players, as they're only obligated to not tax Australian players.

right so you’re assuming here he becomes a tax resident of PnG so the PnG govt agrees not to tax him?

I am sure there are wide loopholes and behind the door handshake promises being made as we speak

My best guess is that it's more about citizenship than tax residency.

I’ve lived in over 5 countries including Aus, and taxed as a resident of those 5 countries regardless of my NZ citizenship…

Yes. But PNG is effectively being paid, by the Australian government, to not tax players (amongst other things).

They aren't a predominantly tax-free country, this is a special exemption.

Edit: but honestly, who knows.
