Healey I think would be the best option in the conditions. Good defender and has that spark around the ruck that could trouble the Tigers

Yeah I haven't boarded the Healey train just yet. Too early for me but how good would it be to have him succeed? And does he see himself as a utility or a specialist 9 with a view to succeed Egan?

a lot is made of the fact that Tigers had the best defence coming into this game. It's the basis behind the media pumping up Tigers top 8 talk this week. But that's not saying much if two of those opponents are the 2 worst attacking units to start this season. That's like playing tennis with the net down.

The comp is really weird this year eh? seeing some real dross and then the big boys have been pegged back a leg or two by virtue of player movement.

Agree the Tigers are untested. Some would say we are untested too, and that we beat a Chooks and Manly outfit while both are still building into a new rhythm / there is a thing called early season inconsistent results and clunky football after all.

On the whole though, we (finally) seem to be playing in a fairer system, especially when you see the Roosters (they will cheat and normal cap rorting will resume, but for now I am gonna enjoy it).

Pamfers, Storm, Broncs still have more talent on the books than anyone else overall, which shouldn't really happen in a capped system - but the Salary cap has never worked in totality so I shouldn't labor the point.

One thing I will say for the Tigers, is that they have been honest toilers for more than two seasons now and have genuinely been struggling and battling like the legendary lil Aussie battler to turn the worst pile of shit in the NRL around.

As such we better pay heed and respect or we will get smashed.

Now we’re all hard work, ground teams down for 60-70 minutes and then win off the back of good defence - long may it continue

I don't think it's any weirder than last year. First few weeks of this season are always noisy. Panthers have made a habit of starting really slowly and building into their seasons. Raiders generally start fast but always eventually revert back to their true state as a mid-tier team. It's not really until the middle of the season (after origin begins) that it becomes obvious who the real surprise packets and disappointments of the competition are.

So we should ignore the table and just focus on playing good consistent footy and building into our season with a late flurry like we did in 2023. People forget that our attacking shape didn't really happen until midway through the season. The start of 2023 looked a lot like 2025 where we scraped wins by bashing teams out of the game in a grindfest rather than through the SJ-CNK-DWZ slingshot that became iconic that year.

I have to think that the dour conditions facing our boys tomorrow suits our gameplan, as others have already mentioned. But what the Broncos/Dolphins match also showed is that a long-kicking game is more important than ever in these conditions. Reynolds basically kicked the dolphins out of the game in the second half. Post-SJ, I've not been impressed with our long kicking game. Having said that, I don't think the Tigers have one either.

I honestly have been very impressed with Luke Metcalfs long kicking game given that it is new and for mine he seems able to hang that bomb up long enough and in reasonable enough field position for us to kick chase.

I expected Metcalf would have had a lot more clangers that turned to shit with his long game....more like SJ the younger who kicked plenty of turds when he was with us pre the Sharks era where his kicking was forced on him as a requisite for playing for Cronulla.

Johnson used to bomb it to no one, often times not placed anywhere practical for the chaser.

We shall see Metcalfs long game in full effect with the return of Berry. Watch this space. But in the mean time I recon our kicking game has not been one of our problems this season, I have probably put the Jonah, the Mocker, on him now, but I think for an ex stand off his kicks have been awesome.

I totally understand your perspective and you may very well be right. In Metcalf's defense, I do accept that some of us who are being critical of his game (me included) need to give him some slack because he has only played about 7 games at half back I believe. He may very well develop this part of his game over time.

This style won't be enough to beat the top 4 teams though. On the bright side however, 2025 so far seems like the beginning of 2023. We started that year winning games by bashing teams out of the game on the back of a dominant middle. The attacking shape came much later in the season, as we worked out our combinations. Here's hoping the same for us this year.
