NRL South Sydney Rabbitohs

South Sydney Rabbitohs’ have made a disastrous start to the NRL season. This led to them cut ties with head coach, Jason Demetriou. The Bunnies sit bottom of the NRL ladder after seven games, with just one win.

Their slow start has prompted the club to swing into action in the transfer market. They are heavily linked with bringing Wayne Bennett back to the club as head coach. They are also on the verge of capturing star St Helens man, Lewis Dodd, on a long-term contract.

South Sydney recruitment chief, Mark Ellison, is currently in the UK. According to reports, he wants to secure a prop and a winger from Super League. Now, the four props on Souths’ list have been revealed.

NRL side chasing Dodd’s team-mate

According to reports in the Courier Mail, Souths have identified four Super League forwards who they believe fit the bill. The first is Dodd’s St Helens team-mate, George Delaney.

However, Delaney is under contract until the end of 2026. This means the Rabbitohs would have to pay a transfer fee to secure his signature.

The 20-year-old made his Super League debut last season. He has made eight appearances in the current season. His importance to the side means Saints will be reluctant to let him leave at this stage.

Former Rabbitoh heavily linked

The report also suggests three other names who the Souths are in signing. Arguably the biggest name is Tom Amone, of the Leigh Leopards. Amone began his career with the Leopards in 2019. He played nine games before moving to the Tigers, then Leigh.

Amone’s contract at Leigh is up at the end of the season. Owner, Derek Beaumont, has spoken of the club’s current challenges with the salary cap. It is possible they may not be able to match an offer from the Souths.

Also on the list is young Wigan forward Tyler Dupree. England international, Dupree, only joined the Super League champions last year. He joined mid-season from Salford Red Devils. Dupree’s form has impressed the Souths. Although his four-year contract may prove a stumbling block.

The final name on the Souths list is another highly rated English forward. Tom Holroyd, of the Leeds Rhinos, made his Super League debut in 2018. His contract expires at the end of 2025 and has the power the Rabbitohs currently lack.

All of these Super League clubs will be desperate to hold onto their prized assets. However, the lure of the NRL may be too strong

Will be interesting to see what happens with Latrell? Surely he doesn’t stay fullback? Would they try him at five eighth like the Manu experiment?
Jye Gray is injured now for a month so may just be Latrell back there by default

Would expect him to stay put at fullback in the time until Gray returns, or even the rest of season? Gray looks good at fullback but has played in the halves too? Would have to think Latrell to the centres with Graham on the other side in terms of next year? With Dodds on the way, would they switch an aging Walker to shift Latrell to five eighth though? Actually think he could do it more effectively than Manu, he has a big boot, whereas Manu is the better fullback I reckon

What is it some of the Souths people say. The pride of the league. Or when Souths go well league goes well. The second one is rare but am pretty sure I've heard it in the past.

Well the years 1990 - 2006 when Souths were crap were great. These last 10 years people talking about them and them being competitive has seemed weird.

A return to being easy beats would be great.

Get rid of Latrell. Get rid of Walker.
They are weekly the worst players in the side.
I was watching a video earlier this week. One of the comments was "The journalists just blaming Mitchell and Walker to feed into their racist fan base".

Mitchell has been the subject of some racial abuse and I'm glad all of the fans that have been caught have been punished.

It doesn't mean either are immune from being criticised.

Both have poor discipline. Mitchell being suspended is his own fault. Like many predicted when he becomes available again the he will likely have a different coach. Walker has been making a lot of mistakes.

Both of them also don't look like they are in the best of shape which gives credence to some of the comments Burgess allegedly made to management. Mitchell was shown on the TV without his jersey before the Vegas game. As much as they talk about his power he doesn't have the body like the other NRL players that have had a lot of pre seasons. Walker also looks to be carrying a bit of extra weight.

Any new coach will need to figure out how to get these two disciplined and playing consistently at their best. Bennett would be one of the few. Even for him it would be a challenge.
