NRL Papua New Guinea Chiefs

What fascinates me about the Chiefs is on multiple levels.

1) Papua New Guinea the place and its people blow my mind.

2) They are the only nation on earth that adopted Rugby League as their national sport

3) In the 80's they beat us, The only tier two nation to do that to a tier one for many decades eh.

4) The tribalism of the crowds, spear waving and shit in the eighties.

5) They play like mad bastards. That is what League once was, the sport for mad men. Before sponsorship and entertainment corrupted that fight out of the game.

6) They have wanted this for so long.....and it was an impossibility until rare and unusual global events entirely external to the game aligned in such a way that the impossible became a reality.

7) Unique in world sport. Unique in world politics. The first and it will be the last and only time that a sport is used to stave off the global expansion of an Asian Empire - oh sure we have seen politics in sport before (NZ has one the worst histories of Politicking around sport - hell we were boycotted at the Olympics for being racist wankers and telling lies about Sport not being part of politics - how lame is that argument now in the light of China - PNG - Canberra).

8) You could make a decent movie. It falls in the sports fantasy movie section really, a blending of Salmon fishing in Yemen and Field of dreams.

9) The Chiefs will help the children of PNG in the same way that the Warriors and All Blacks have helped many a youth in this country. Except the Chiefs impact will be profound,. The long term strategic plan to develop League in PNG via the chiefs is going to open up pathways to other NRL clubs for PNG youth in the same fashion the Warriors tilt young footballers towards league in this country.....except for one key difference - these kids are already Rugby league born and bred, they just don't have fields to play on or coaches etc - or even a dream.

How many youth inspired by sport that do not make it in that sport, still go away changed people for the experience of being part of something?

9) Haere mai, haere mai, haere mai, brothers and sisters of the Austronesian realms, a new culture in the NRL, a new country - for far too long has Aotearoa been the lone 'visitor' in this place, it is well nigh past time to share that burden of being the outsider with others. And thanks for taking it on the chin with the Refs when they give you the special noob treatment - don't worry it wears off if you complain for two decades and they Ref fairer.

10. I will make this my last point, coz I do 100s and 10 points is cheeky - pushing it, this team is going to boost interest in the sport period. Lets hope they are competitive out the gate, especially opening night, like 1995....Mt Smart.....the biggest night the NRL has ever had. There is not a single regular season game in the history of the NRL that has even come close to the first time the NEW AUCKLAND WARRIORS came out of that tunnel.

Like my father used to say about my mother who was predominantly a stay-at-home wife but would occasionally get some cash for cleaning the neighbours' house.

There is our money, and there is her money.
Wise man your Dad.

Cracked the code before happy wife happy life was taught in schools.

I don't think I'll ever be fully comfortable with the PNG team. Sports and politics should never mix, and while you can't get away from a little bit of mixing, this was born purely on that along with $$ bribes by the Governments to PVL.

Tax free salary cap is a crazy incentive that imbalances the NRL salary cap certainly. I don't think they will truly be a threat for the comp or the best players who are young enough, but there will be a line up of 30 year olds looking for a 1-2 year deal to finish their careers no doubt. To spend years in a compound is not my idea of life and work balance. Might be fine for short term deals though.

You can't not be interested in how this will all work.

Add to that the league is already looking super short in squad depth, and an increased pace of play being hugely pushed leading to more injuries..

I feel for Perth a little, but TBH I think their set up of the club has been shit from the start. Maninga as head coach has Bluey+Warriors like disaster written all over it, football manager role or something similar would have been a far better fit.

I think you need to remember that the people, not the politicians dearly wanted this for a very long time.

It not all political.

By not being comfortable with them (a personal position which I accept) you are in sense adopting a self political position from the power of one.

Australia and PNG are allies anyway - you could make a very robust argument that Australia owe PNG this, without the China angle.

As we are allied with Australia - the propaganda around our own 'sibling rivalry' comes from the politics of war and our shared values. Lets not kid ourselves, every game that is played by a person representing a piece of dirt of a sovereign state is making a political statement.

How does this fantasy of this imaginary non political sports fit with flags and anthems and national colours and countries names. To be Apolitical those would be removed from sport entirely.

And anyway every major sporting event since the modern Olympics have been 100% politically coloured right across to World cups and heavy weight championships.

The separation of sport and politics in a broadcasted event is a nonsense.

I would love to hear anyone make an argument for the Russia Vs USA Hockey and Basketball matches during the cold war existing in anyway free of a political paradigm.

It isn't actually possible to remove politics no matter how much artificial separation you create in the mind to see competition involving cultures and nations and class - lets remind ourselves here that the game we follow was directly born out of political upheaval over fair pay and the unfair disadvantage of class and those roots in England were transplanted directly into the founding of the sport in this country, People frankly do not like to be honest about this but 'State house Rugby' has always been a specifically NZ political reality.

The contrasting prospects for Fijian Drua vs Moana Pasifika (MP) in Super Rugby is actually a good parallel for PNG vs Perth I think. Maybe their on-field success could be better, but there is no doubt that the Drua has been a commercial success and has contributed a lot to the economy there in Fiji. Not to mention the additional pathways that it has provided for local development, especially important for an improving rugby country like Fiji. Contrast that to the train wreck that is MP which really was doomed from the start due to the half-hearted support it got from NZ/world rugby.

Hope the parallel doesn't repeat itself for league. But unless the NRL/WA Government is willing to really back the venture, I can see the Bears fate being just as grim as for MP. Given the emotional rollercoaster that Bears fans have gone through and the previous failure of the Western Reds, that would be tragic for all parties involved.

And more critically, the Chiefs are the only show in town (in PNG) The Bears are trying to cut into successful markets covered by AFL, Rugby, Soccer and Ball. Plus, those sports are pretty well embedded in WA.

Not to say they can't be successful but it sure as hell will be a tough road to hoe
