International Origin in NZ

NZWarriors.com

It's going to sell out easily.

The rusted on league audience is quite deep in NZ

The $5m probably has a good investment case on the economic benefit for how many Australians will travel over.

If it was 5 years I could see it struggling eventually like the Nines did in the end - but to sell our but a one off is pretty much a sure fire bet as you can get. It may actually be tough to secure a ticket.

It will sell out easy, interest in rugby league extends far beyond the Pacific community.
Oh absolutely. This thing will go off

As much as the death riders wont want to hear it, the intensity and quality of footy it throws up is still of the highest order, that u only occasionally get on the international stage (kiwi's/Samoa last week being one of them and hopefully tonights game another)

If the NZ goverment wants to throw money into league based on a projected ROI, throw it into a sweetener for a 2nd NRL team down South.

You'd create jobs, get millions back in PAYE every year across the players and staff, create a match day hospo economy around the games, and you'd encourage Aussies over to catch their team and get around the South Island while they're at it.

How about do both, doesn’t need to be one or the other. Great that the government is supporting league.

But they aren't doing both.
Well that’s because there’s already 2 teams joining, however if the NRL decide they want a second NZ team then support it then. In any case what’s the problem, isn’t any government support great news?

Not you specifically, however I do find it a little amusing that a couple of the more negative voices re Origin coming to NZ are the same ones that try to throw the ‘NRL hates the Warriors’ narrative out at every opportunity. Some people can never be happy.

Hope I’m not one of those, if you read my posts I mention that it’s probably my personal lack of interest in origin and said it’ll probably sell out. Think my reasoning was legitimate about my feeling of filling out a bigger stadium etc were fair and if we’re going to play a silly little political game I was critical of the team not being able to get home through the covid time stuck in Aussie. It’s great you’re so enthusiastic, hopefully you get in quick enough for a ticket in 2027

No not you I was referring to & totally get your point of view. I typically don’t stay up for the games unless it’s a decider. However I’ve been to a few origin games & they are awesome, def worth getting to regardless of whether you are passionate about either side or just want to see some intense football.

Sorry to jump to that conclusion

Government support that actually benefits New Zealand rugby league is great. The benefits here are all to the Aussies cashing the Govt cheque.

Can try and spin it at as benefical to league in NZ by potentially bringing in new fans and promoting the sport, but in reality it's a circus for the NRL/SoO casuals that does nothing for helping our own representative team, clubs, or grassroots.

In fact, more likely it'll just further reinforce the idea that Origin is the pinnacle and league is an Aussie thing that the Kiwis are battling against now.

And we could've been one of the two teams joining if we had the Govt support on the sweetener WA had.

It’s promoting rugby league in NZ, unquestionably a positive.

Ah, it's promoting Australian rugby league isn't it?

I'm definitely biased, so curious what the actual tangible benefits to rugby league in NZ will be?

More playing numbers? Better Kiwis teams? Better club facilities for our kids? Or any facilities at all in too many cases? More fans for the Kiwis/Warriors?

How about look at it from the NRL’s perspective, ask yourself why they are bothering to send a game over to NZ?

I totally get what you’re saying. But the money is out of a pool of money to bring in major events from overseas so can’t really be used for grass roots league.

If SOO didnt get the cash another event would have been funded instead.
