NRL NRL Rules

Good news: The NRL is reportedly set to backflip on the idea to introduce kick-off changes in 2025. Must have seen the amount of backlash they were getting which was overwhelmingly negative.
Good, it would've handed more of the game to refs to judge blockers and disruptors and intent to catch the ball and all that shit, it never works out well for us giving the refs more discretion. And also we'd never have the chance to watch Ben Hunt drop a kickoff next to the posts with a minute to go in a GF again.

May had 11 games this year where he played 50 minutes or more so he has a motor. More likely they are after Hunt and needed cap space. Small mobile forwards are favoured but the Sharks didn't get the memo this year and did well.

If you look at our likely starting front row next year (JFH & Barnett) they are both convert backrowers. In fact our likely starting 17 would not have a player that started their career as a prop.
I was more hinting at them releasing him and how it had nothing to do with off field stuff despite the rumours discussed at the time of his release.

Robinson could be wanting to free up space for someone like Hunt or to change the make up of his pack. It was just a bit of an eye opener that they released a front rower after already have JWH retire.

Or conspiracy time. Is so he can justify axing May? He was too big.

My wacky conspiracy is the rule changes to speed the game up, the set restarts in particular, pretty conveniently coincided with Tonga having just beaten Australia through the sheer size and power of their team.

Trent Robinson was against the new kick off rule. Just said there should be a send off if someone tackles high.

Found this interesting especially when you consider the likely make up of the Warriors.
"The six-again rule has been really, really good for us, but it's also cost front-rowers. Front-rowers are worth a lot, but bench front-rowers are obsolete," he said.

"We're all playing with locks and we're all playing with guys that are going to run a long distance."
Of course he would say to send them off now that JWH has left the club

Rules I might like to see

5 tackle sets
6 tackles when ball is kicked out on full
miss penalty kick, do not get ball back from 20m dropkick. 20m tap, 5 tackle set
enforce voluntary tackle rule
stop ref coaching at scrums
throw disrupter rule in the bin

JUDICIARY
everyone starts year with clean slate, however suspensions do carry over from year prior
1st suspension of the year 1 week reduced
no 1 charge is worth more than 4 weeks
no case to answer if ball runner falls/slips
contest and lose, do not get more weeks (that's some tyrant shit)

NRL considering shake-up with sin bin rule after select coaches make proposal

WWOS staff
February 4, 2025 - 10.50am

The NRL will trial a new concussion rule that will see players sent to the sin bin up to 15 minutes after committing a high tackle that rules a rival player out of the game.

Ahead of pre-season trials that begin on Friday, The Sydney Morning Herald revealed a select group of coaches approached the NRL about tinkering with the concussion rules, although league officials will not implement change for the upcoming season.

Fans were left frustrated and confused at times last season by a perceived lack of consistency in imposing penalties on players guilty of high tackles.

Under the new proposal, the sin bin would only be used if the tackled player failed a head injury assessment.

The player will remain on the field until the HIA results are made known, The Herald reports.

If the injured player is deemed not well enough to return to play, the game will be stopped and the offender will be sent for 10 minutes.

The NRL was contacted by the Herald but declined to comment on the proposals.

The NRL has stated during the off-season that referees plan to crack down on sloppy play-the-balls in the early rounds.

The obstruction rule will also be a point of emphasis, with referees told to reward good attacking play rather than poor defensive reads where a defender appears to be taken out.

Can see scenarios where players on the bench are sent to the bin if the offending player was back on the bench after the HIA tackle in question. What about scenario where the offending player is sent to the bin already after committing the tackle, after the failed HIA surely the new sinbin doesnt restart as the penalised player has already done his time.

I can see a number of scenarios where there are going to be potential issues.

In my opinion, the sin bin has been used too much in recent seasons for things that it really shouldn't be used for anyway. Just officiate the game as it plays out. There should be no more or less penalty for an injury or not, HIA or not. Either its sin bin worthy or not at the time.

Also, define what a play the ball is and what will be penalised. Its not that hard surely? Stand up, plant the ball, use your foot to play the ball back.. and be consistent with the rulings on that.

With obstructions being rewarded for good attacking play rather than poor defensive reads where a defender appears to be taken out, this will open a bigger gray area than there already is IMO and will lead to even more inconsistent rulings.

I agree, I get what they are trying to do but waiting 15 minutes to send someone to the bin is going to mess with the flow of the game.
Bin at the time or not at all.

and if the event happens in the 70th minute? Do they rush the assessment to get an opposition player off the field? If they don't rush it and they fail the HIA, the opposition team could get away with no sin bin at all, or only a few minutes of the game.

Look at the holes everyone can poke through it in 25 minutes.
Also Coaches will find a way to manipulate it then more rules might be introduced to counter it becoming a total cluster.
Better clarity on what a Sin Bin is is the answer.
Something to do with the attacking player must be standing upright would be a good start! Nothing annoys me more than a falling player into someones arm and they get binned!
