General NRL Round 7 2026 Discussion

100%. All the careful long term planning undone by Gus acting like a human magpie.

I reckon he actually knows his stuff when it comes to setting up club systems and all that. He just get's a bit cancerous if he hangs around too long - too meddley.

To me, you'd wanna get him on, let him setup your pathways/learn from him and then piss him off before he becomes a problem.

He knows his stuff but just can't help the tinkering and has the huge ego to go with it.

I also think they believe in their system a bit too much - in that they think players doing their job / role is more important than the intangibles of team chemistry.

Well here's a head scratcher for you.

Do you think our front office had an idea that Boyd would go this well, synergy wise?

They did sign him so they must have had a thought he had untapped potential. But probably maybe not to those rd 1 - 3 levels of form.

Our culture seems to be one of biggest strengths at the moment.

You gotta wonder if there's a certain amount of luck to player synergy, right?

I do wonder if we are walking a tight rope, when it comes to players coming in and players going out. You don't wanna upset the apple cart.

I think Penrith got it right by trying to keep as many of their system boys together, for as long as possible.

Can't do anything with Barney as it's a kid thing and Marata's a dead weight 90% of the time, but we're either letting Dallin/RTS/Cape go out on a high or letting them go 1-2 years too early. If we miss out on Boyd/CHT extensions it might be a bit too much looking at the stock behind them, unless they wanna extend TMM again 🤣

Egan's been incredible I hope we extend him again. If we've got our centres/wingers sorted esp if Berry somehow recovers, they can focus on improving the FB position at least for 2-3 years until 1 of the Flegg kids are ready?

I think we should try and keep Egan as long as possible (while his body holds up) and upskill him with coaching credentials. A dedicated hooking coach could be a huge asset.

The only reason you might extend TMM is if we lose one or both of Boyd and CHT to another team.

Ideally you have Boyd, Metcalf, CHT signed up (how you manage Metcalf is another thing entirely) and have Jett and Hanson as back up?

We definitely need halves cover, particularly with Metcalf's history. Question is would Jett be ready for first grade next season if both Boyd and Metcalf went down injured? (assuming Boyd is signed for next season)

He may have, but these guys are all suffering early onset CTE and a played a game that's completely different now.

I mean even Bellamy is looking past it.

There is Linnane too unsure how he'd go. It'd be pretty unlucky to have Boyd and Metcalf injured together, CHT probably has to play 7 like most 6s have to do during an emergency, and Jett if he has a boot can do the long kicking? If Boyd gets injured right now it'll be CHT/Hansen so that's just the way it goes. Jett seems to be doing well at cup? Could be where Hansen was in R3 by this time next year?

This is my take. If we can get all 3 on the field at the same time, playing at their peak, its a prem for sure
I'm not convinced that LM is the one. I also don't think we can, or should, have all three off LM, Boyd and CHT in the same team. But he is signed for the next few years so they need to find how and where he best suits the team. It maybe he is a very expensive back up half in cup. Or maybe Boyd struggles to maintain his start to the season and gets demoted. Only thing we really know right now is Bpyd and CHT are performing well for us at 6 and 7.

Add in Jack Thompson as back up. I know he is only 20 but he looks special.

Right now I have Metcalf > Healey at 14.
