NRL NRL Round 1, 2026 Discussion

I get the feeling that game meant a lot to storm with scenes of Hughes screaming at Pezet on the ground when a mistake was made, Ryles and storm history and the whole storyline with Lomax. Probably ended up quite personal for storm
Bellamy probably MADE it quite personal for the storm as part of his intensity personality…

I always found it odd how all the experts were pumping parra up and dissing Melbourne during the off-season. Important lesson throughout time is never to underestimate melbourne- no matter who they lose they replace with someone equally as good if not better given time. They'll be there abouts again towards the end of this year.

Parra have been the media darlings for the last 2 years now but let's face it they are still away from being a consistent top 8 team. They were anchored towards the bottom of the ladder last year for a reason. They'll be lucky to scrape into the 8 this year.

Besides the sin binning it's been a good start from the Eels.

Managed to get a turn over on that Storm attacking set. Then managed to score while down a man.

They look a lot better than the same game last year. Hopefully tha doesn't come back to bite me and I wake up and they have been pumped boy 40.
This aged well.

Well the bit about the Eels looking good. That lasted all of 5-10 minutes.

I did go to bed at half time to wake up to them getting 50 (lose by 48 points) put on them.

Don’t think he needed to MAKE it with all the storylines there, I’m sure the players were well up for it without him needing to give too much inspiration. That coupled with storms round 1 success year after year was a big ask for eels
Yes, probably but I think Bellamy’s success over the years is firing up his players more than other coaches are able to.

Again his personality and intensity coming out in his team

When lose players and you see the media writing them off or questioning them. It reminds me of boxing pundits wanting to pick against Floyd Mayweather back in the day. Want to be the first to pick him to lose or when Melbourne will struggle or miss the eight.

Until they miss the 8. They are a lock in terms of picking the top 8 for me.

100% they deserve that respect now. I remember the Cronk / Smith / Slater days saying it would all crumble when they left. How wrong.

Winning your first game 23 years in a row makes it easier to continually make finals.

These first games of the year tell you a lot about the pre season, coaching and team culture. We all know that’s Bellamy’s super power. Question is when you’re the Eels coach, senior players etc where do you go in your head from here. What’s the chat? So much hype and prep and talk about being up for the game and then you come out and go to jelly. TBH Melbourne aren’t anywhere near their ruthless efficient best. Still plenty of early season rust from them on some plays but the Eels look shell shocked and bewildered to even be on the field. Bit for Ryles to work on this week 🧐 50 points up the chute makes ya walk funny for a while 😳
That first Grant try was the whole game - Parra extremely slow in the ruck and not getting square (the forwards were gassed already), Longi in the line and he went straight through - really horrible from the Eels

Eels performance is perfect example of why freaking out over trial form is just plain dumb. They dominated the pre-season, looking very slick and actually dusting over the Sharks and Roosters in their trial matches, both of whom fielded quite strong teams. Yet when it comes down to competition pts for the first time, they shit the bed. Just like us last year owning the pre-season challenge cup before stuffing up in Vegas big time.

Any updates on Hopgood sinbining and what will be the outcome. Looking like an accidental shoulder to the head initially

Broncos won the Pre-season challenge last year then won the comp but yeah most first graders just use it to gain a bit of match fitness. We drew with the Sharks then beat a nsw cup Storm side in the 2nd trial last year.

But they started the season drunk which is my pt. Early season form and trials are if anything negatively correlated.
