NRL NRL Expansion

“They all just took it for granted,” V’landys said. “We asked for a business case from each of the interested bid teams and quite simply, they don’t stack up.... “We want those consortiums to show us where a new fan base is and that they won’t be stealing fans from the Broncos, Titans or Dolphins.
Thats my feeling with the Chch team atm. Converting a large portion of Warriors fans and union tragics is risky asf

This just feels like a bit of a Shakedown from PVL and the NRL (I don’t really blame them in a way)

NZ will get a second team, in Christchurch. The upfront money and big commercial endorsements may be a problem, one i don’t really have an answer for. But that’s the clubs problem not the NRLs.
But everything else……
Player pool (best RU nursery in THE WORLD)
Fan base
Weakening a rival code
Sky TV, it’ll be fine.
They’ll be competitive within 3-5 years, bet you anything.

Otherwise the NRL was probably never actually going to expand to 20 teams. And 600 million is the actual answer for admission.

TBH, I’d just be happy with a NSW/ Queensland cup team. Because that’ll probably benefit the Warriors more lol.

NRL Expansion Team - Christchurch??
With the constant talk of expansion I truly believe that Christchurch is the next best suited place for an expansion team for NZ & the NRL.

In the past 2 years the Warriors have hosted both the Storm & Tigers in Christchurch for pre season as well as the Raiders for a regular season game. All which have been a sell out. Kiwis hosted Australia on Sunday evening (Labour Day long weekend) also a sell out on a weekend where many of people head away.

I think the NRL are testing to see how a 2nd NZ team would go by having these games in Christchurch. With the new stadium not far away Christchurch seems to be the no brainer for expansion with in NZ. There is no need for 2 north island teams. A north vs south rivalry which is already as big as it gets in Super Rugby with the Blues vs Crusaders. It’s a no brainer and I hope it happens soon. Crusaders have proven that Rugby can strive in Christchurch, why cant that be league?

Outside the rock solid commercial viability of any successful ChCh bid, there seems to me to be an important role of the NRL here to assist in strengthening and growth of the playing pool, along side of any bid and the CRL.

To have had 3 unsuccessful bids being pitched out of the stronghold of NZ Rugby does says a lot about the potential opportunities and viability a team being based in Christchurch could be, because it was only a few years ago this wouldn’t have even been a consideration let alone an official opportunity .
The NRL can play a part here, or should I say, have to play a part here for the betterment of the game and its longevity.
What is the NRL’s strategic vision for the growth of the game in NZ ( and it’s talent pool for new players it’s competition ) and how do/can they can play a part in realising this because they cannot leave it up the Warriors alone especially if next year they have a poor season.
It does sound like in the interim David Moffet has had a chat with Peter V’Landys at Sundays sold out Test Match and he has been given a glimmer that one more shot will be given but if you cock this one up don’t bother coming back.
Either way, if the NRL are serious about the NZ game and the bigger picture of their game now is the time to capitalise on the growing disillusionment surrounding rugby in this country and the unrealised pool of talent to tap into, otherwise the opportunity might just pass it by.

If 9 bidders can all got it wrong and ‘took it for granted’ it appears more that the NRL hasn’t communicated the requirements properly!
It seems that all the bidders were trying their luck. Even the Kea have stated that they think they know where they went wrong and what they can do to rectify their bid to resubmit. Seems like most of the bids wanted to get in without as much investment as possible and hoping the NRL would just give them a ride on their back.

BTW what is the Endacott bid called? Do they even have a name?

I don’t know about trying their luck in a competitive process where South Island and Brisbane had 3 competing bids.

I think it’s more they all had differing strength and the NRL is rightfully trying to value their product highly and maximise the value.

Once the PNG bid went at $60m, has that set the standard? Is that reasonable and as Falcon Falcon has said, the good of the game and growth has to be a factor as well as getting a perfect bid and maximised money.

My feeling is they have to go long term and strategic (Perth and South Island) with the NrL having an equity stake if the cost is prohibitive?

I agree with TohuKnees it is a shakedown

The NRL wants a big cash up front payment. I am just speculating of course,

Also note that the NRL isnt interested in new teams cannibalizing existing teams fanbases.

.
If that's a strict criteria SI will never get a team since the majority of southern leaguies are Wahs fans. Forget about it then.

Doubt it, they just let the Dolphins in. A huge part of their fan base would have already been existing fans of the Bronx or some other team in the NRL.

Not like a team in North Brisbane converted a bunch of new RL fans in a league obsessed state.

Doesn't matter where they go, huge part of any new clubs fanbase will be made up of existing NRL fans who'll ditch their current team the same way so many of us did when the Warriors came in.

I'm a Wahs fan because it's my only option! Ain't no way in he'll I'm supporting an Australian club and that's the reason I started following the Warriors as an 9 year old In 95. As soon as a South Island team comes into the comp I'm jumping ship because Chch>Auckland>Australia.
