Crazy thing about Kiwi centre stocks back in the 90s was Craig Innes never even played for the Kiwis and he was a helluva player.

Was there some SL v ARL shenanigans there?

Rd 4 1996 we had 7 centres starting in first grade in McCraken, Wiki, Taewa, Timu, Blackmore, Ropati, & Innes. With another in Iro off in the UK but certainly ARL standard.

Been mentioned already but he was arl when the kiwis went super league.
Played for the rest of the world team against Australia though.
Terry hill said innes was the best center he ever played with or against- high praise indeed.

Im not that keen on bringing ponga in tbh- we’ve got kini who’s younger and 100% invested- shades of the sbw, tohu Harris debacle.
I guess him changing allegiance doesn’t guarantee him the number jersey though- it would be nice to at least have the option of picking him- you’d have him in the squad somewhere.
Damn just talked myself into it.

Let’s see how Ponga goes this year
I watched him
In one or two live games this year and I don’t see 1.4 mill of value
Maybe having Dylan Brown there this year will unlock some potential
Also the time spent injured seems to be half a season a year. Walsh has overtaken him as QLD fullback
Yeah let’s see how Ponga goes this year cause last couple years he was either meh or injured for the Knights

John Timu went over and was a handy player, seems like he might have enjoyed a good party too? Old midweek All Black I did some work for once said Zinzan Brook was really close to going to bulldogs and bulldogs also chased Jonah Lomu hard

Competition for spots though.....good for the Jersey if there is a battle to earn it.

You select both players in tournament format and you play both players.

Winner takes the Jersey....the old school way....

Also as we have learned from Jason Taumalolo, if you bring in a Star player that you never imagined would play for Tonga.....the flood gates open and all the Kiwis who might be planning on playing for Australia could have a rethink....flip the eligibility script in other words.

In Walter little and frank bunces autobiography they said if rugby hadn’t of gone professional in 96 the entire 95 all black World Cup backline was going to league- forced unions hand really.

I reckon with Isaako getting on, there could be wing available at some point and Kini could work some magic from there? You often see with nsw origin team that they have these great fullbacks but only one can get the spot so Mitchell and Trbojovich often play centres. Losing Isaako will be a shame for his goal kicking and he can play. Will be interesting to see where he goes with dolphins saying they won’t be extending him past his current contract? Still has plenty to offer
