International New Zealand Kiwis

Still gonna be hard to beat australia in australia with australian refs- makes the comp look a bit amateurish not having neutral refs- cant imagine soccer or rugby fans standing for that.
When you have English and New Zealand Refs available, French too, it is just Australian Corruption.

I never like talk of us being favorites, that never bodes well against Australia.

When you don't have the ball for long phases, endless six agains and strange penalties, suspect Bunker calls, being 'favorites' means nothing.

We’ve got one hell of a team though. Crazy good forwards, great bench, strike in the backs and Hughes returning is a solid pair in him and Dylan Brown. Ponga coming over would be great, but it would probably shift Kini to a wing?

Probably my favorite game ever.
I recorded it on the vhs- definitely the game I’ve watched the most.
It's in my top three.
Hard to believe we had Centers and Wingers up the Razzoo in those days with the talent of your Iro's McCracken's, Blackmore's, Hope's, Barnett's etc - genuine specialists with classy athleticism that could break games apart single handed.

Can you believe we let a guy that had a full on seizure play? Even in those days that was wrong, if it happened in somone's house you would be driving Deano to A & E right?
Football heads were trully morons. Big dumb thick as two planks slow talkers - and that's just the officials....

Man in those days I used to get physically ill watching test matches, such was the emotional stress - then you would memorize the commentary after watching it a 1000 times on vhs, the best bits being when someone like Hughes or Rabs or any of those Aussies were gloating (knowing they won't be gloating at the end).

Richie Blackmore came to a club I was working in those days a couple of weeks after that test, I was star struck - let him and his party jump the queue, and I set up a bar tab for him - turns out he was on the orange juice in those days, and his companions were Mormons so it cost me nothing to 'shout' them jugs of OJ haha.

Yeah the lonergan shuffle- unbelievable to think he came back on- that really was crazy- had a great game too but looking back that was insane.
McCracken and Blackmore ripped meninga and shearer to shreds that night- the next week McCracken gets sent off for getting punched in the head by Peter Jackson while 2 Aussie players were holding his arms 🤷‍♂️ nothing to see here….

It’s a good debate- we’ve had some studs- wiki was devastating at center, dean bell, steve matai… Craig innes doesn’t get the recognition he deserves but putting nostalgia aside I think Joey manu would be my pick tbh.

Crazy thing about Kiwi centre stocks back in the 90s was Craig Innes never even played for the Kiwis and he was a helluva player.

Was there some SL v ARL shenanigans there?

Rd 4 1996 we had 7 centres starting in first grade in McCraken, Wiki, Taewa, Timu, Blackmore, Ropati, & Innes. With another in Iro off in the UK but certainly ARL standard.

McCracken is the greatest centre the Kiwis have had with apologies to Kevin Iro.
Dean Whare and Dean Bell for mine.

Whare had the most rounded game of the lot imo, great defensive read, amazing ball playing skill, footwork pace.

Dean Bell was the toughest defensively, great ball playing back, just world class.

But people tend to like the big tackle busting guys which is fine. Reading some of the posts on this subject no one is wrong with their picks, they were all great players.

Just comes down to personal preference, mine is defence and ball playing first.

My favourite of that era was Jason Williams, not the best defender but he could break a game open from anywhere, the SJ of his day.

He moved to Manly in 1996 & only SL aligned players got picked for tour to PNG & England. 1995 he was in Perth so maybe out of sight & out of mind? Blackmore, Wiki & Kevin Iro were the Centres at RLWC '95. He went to Super Rugby once the comps combined in '98
