I admire your idealism, a trait not seen a lot these times.
And don't mind me, I'm just an old cynic who gets disturbed with the new type of activism round these days in many of the facets of our lives.

The Ardern Government in 2021 offered $30b to the acquisition of international carbon credits as part of its 2021-30 “Nationally-Determined Contribution” (NDC) under the UNFCCC Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
That November 2021 Cabinet decision was the largest donation of taxpayer funds ever made by any New Zealand Government.
This had no mandate. It formed no part of the Labour manifesto in the 2020 elections. It was not the culmination of public consultation or any kind of public debate. It was not budgeted. Despite its pre-emption of subsequent governments, it made no pretence at all of being multi-partisan.
Parliament, which was suspended at that time because of Covid-19 lockdowns, was not consulted or even informed. Nor was the Labour Party’s own caucus or policy committee. Cabinet rode roughshod over the unanimous opposition of all of its officials and advisers. All the assumed checks and balances were simply ignored. This decision may eventually be seen as New Zealand’s largest-ever political scandal.
$30b could end poverty in NZ; buy a new hospital, university and stadium for every city in NZ. It works out at $24k per household in NZ. Imagine that as a tax cut? Well that’s what Ardern spent of your household money. There was no cost benefit analysis - What would be the consequence, in terms of increased poverty, lower literacy, higher mortality rates, bankruptcies, unemployment, hardships, etc? I hope National backs us out of this deal.
The posters on here complaining about outside influences affecting right politics need to look in the left mirror…
But would it have solved climate change??? The Glasgow delegates upon commitment, were more concerned that NZ was buying offshore credits rather than reducing its own emissions and actually fixing the problem… It would not reduce NZ’s emissions by a single tonne.

That’s actually ridiculous. And, being cynical, it is $30b of public money spent on PR, to make Ardern / NZ look good in the eyes of others. Crazy when you think about it, and where we all are now

Interesting read. With us having to buy credits rather than lower our own emissions, could it be that administrations are struggling to get industries of the worst polluters to commit to the real measures necessary? Or any that will actually make any difference with the article mentioning how the administration before was flailing in this area also.
to be honest, it is no wonder why we are in this sorry financial (& infrastructure) state when you consider that a $30b donation was just swept through without any sort of challenge by the previous government. If they had actually understood the financial impacts of their decisions, NZ would be in a much better state to invest in everything else that is now falling apart

Nuclear is dangerous if used wrong, nuclear is expensive to build. But when done properly , it generates shit tonnes of power for fuck all for 100years. There’s no grift in there for politicians or shitty renewable companies.

We are already very clean and green compared to the rest of the world and we don’t have the big game changing easy wins.
We’re forced to pick around the edges where it’s huge cost and inconvenience with marginal benefit.
We also still pay a million a day since 2017 for emergency housing without any policy of how we break this. Good that people have a roof over their heads but just like many things believe it their entitlement so don’t try to help themselves.
To me, it only highlights the donor system that wealthy corporations are able to buy off politicians in order for better outcomes for themselves that we aren’t able to move the dial in this area, and that’s worldwide- not just NZ.
No mandate, no checks and balances, no budget. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt. But it makes them look good for their next career move. For themselves, by themselves. Making the country poorer with a donation we can't afford and in the same breath talk about reducing child poverty in New Zealand etc. Lies, lies and more lies. But we banned coal, oil and gas. But have to import more dirty coal from Indonesia. I wonder who have their fingers all over that. Yup, Blackrock. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt. And you wonder why the previous government spent so much on PR. So the gullible could lap up the hollow promises and lies. And if you believe that Ardern resigned because of burn out you are kidding yourself. She resigned before her bought by tax payer money international reputation was tarnished. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt.
Many of our waterways are an indication of the pollution made, we also have raw sewage going into the ocean on swimming beaches around the country. Some is dilapidated infrastructure but some is also pollution made by some industries. We’re a long way from the clean green image we portrayed years ago and many countries have made inroads to better their own performances.

Well, at least you can't say the previous government weren't anything other than consistent. Spend billions of tax payer money that delivers no result.
