Now that it's happened a second time (along with the leg break) there is definitely reason for concern about his recovery, but going into this season he did all the rehab needed, was looking great fitness wise for the first 15 rounds and was even talked up as an Origin bolter a couple of weeks ago form wise so it's understandable why he was chosen as SJ's successor. In the modern game the only half that has been miraculously unscathed is DCE, otherwise it's been a stacked casualty ward.
It was fucking bad luck, which has nothing to do with the integrity of his body - i'm backing him to get back, he's shown the resilience already and there's no better place for him to show it again than mt smart - we've got a high quality player here who i think has the honour to give back to the club that has backed him - go well Luke, the force is strong with this one

It was a brutal (but legal) tackle.

If the club are smart they will offer him a full price contract .

It is likely he will fully recover from his injury and be ready to play next year so what is the issue?

That way the club signals to Metcalf that we really are the best club he could spend the rest of his career at. Which all going well is a win for both parties.

Also, for people wanting to low ball injured players, do you wish Barnett was not signed for next year so we could have low balled him for the next two years too? Same injury, another Star NRL player in top form....is that how we want to roll as an organization???

You get hurt we value you less till you do the rehab then we have you locked in on a shitty deal while you perform the same for us in future?

If he weirdly does not recover then they have only committed to the one season, and they have the safety net of Boyd being contracted next year.

He's under contract next season already. I think the club will look to up his deal slightly for next season as a signing bonus, and extend him for 27 & 28. A million bucks seems unlikely though, this is hardly his first injury so I think it will affect his value. But a $800k/season deal feels reasonable.. It will be a risk for the club though.

Tbf a guy like Dylan Brown has signed with Knights for 1.3m per year and could be injured next week or at training tomorrow
No certainties in life

The way I look at it is that the club have already had the better end of the deal, this season he was playing like a Million dollars on a lesser contract while locked in for next season on less than the Dally M player of the year rates.

I see no reason to take a discount in this situation, we are already ahead of the curve on what he is delivering based off what we are paying for it.

Anyway, we didn't entertain reducing SJs big contract after he busted that leg and had other injuries. Metcalf is young. I just think people think keeping players like this is easier than it is.

Well there is a pretty good reason for not paying his top value, we want to win a comp, and it's hard to win one if your 7 plays 10-16 games a season and misses playoffs. He's played 34 games over 3 seasons with us let's not forget. I'm not saying the guy will get a half price contract or something silly. But to say his value isn't affected with anther major injury, sounds unlikely to me. Don't get me wrong, he deserves to get paid, and he will.

Of course his value is impacted, for multiple and obvious reasons. If this was his first major injury, it would still impact his value. Dude not only took a major injury but just lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in an instant, I'm impressed by his stoicism (even if it is just a post) a good sign for his mindset.

Ideally it's just a delay of a couple years on what was coming at the end of this year with his peak value. Will be very telling seeing how we go with Boyd or TMM in the halves. Metcalf was getting better all the time, but I think especially early we've won because of disicpline and forwards dominance. Any game where our forwards haven't been dominant we've lost regardless of how the rest of the team play. Losing Barney has been more catostrophic than I thought even as a huge fan of his.

It's brutal for the wahs as these next few years are keen and we had the chance at a consistent 7 for the next many years, if he stayed.
