Only way we should release him now is with some form of compensation, which the dragons have nothing we want
Cash is good. We are keen enough for $$$ that we take a home game to Magic Round each year. Have it as an away game next year and use a transfer fee from the dragons to replace the lost revenue

It is good that it looks like he has his future sorted. The club said they hoped it would be sorted by the weekend.

I can understand the Dragons wanting him early. Their current record obviously. But clubs often push to get players early. If I recall correctly there was speculation we asked about getting him early when he was stuck in NSW Cup at Cronulla.

I know there have been comments on how much we signed him for. That is with the benefit of hindsight. Recruitment is always a risk and with his history there is risk he may not see much game time. Signing him last year was the right call and the money was for a starting half and would have been market value as other clubs would have signed him if he reached November 1.

I know there has been talk about his contract and clubs don't play players on that much in NSW or QLD Cup. That isn't ideal long term. What is long term is subjective. However a few weeks in NSW Cup after an ACL injury or after his hamstring would have been useful. Get some game time guiding a side around the field.

I'm still of the opinion rewarding Boyd was the correct call. We weren't expected to win while Metcalf was out. He got us through that period.

If Metcalf was annoyed coming back to play 6. You could argue CHT has more of reason to feel aggrieved. He started the season with a few wins. Sure he had the week off due to concussion. But he pretty much carried on his form from last year at 6 and then was move to accommodate Metcalf.

Good on you guys for your positive juju, but as much as I have enjoyed having Metcalf at our club, I can't bring myself to wish him good fortune for 2026. What a bad taste. We have a significantly (imho) weaker squad this year. A lot of people in this country deserve better than that.

An honourable exit for 2027 would have been a different matter. I heartily support all ex-Warriors.

Yes, it provides some potentially exciting possibilities for cap management for NEXT year.

I am down the middle with my feelings on MR Metcalf.

On the negative side I am pissed off with how this all throws a spanner in the works of our season while we were meant to be all on a high and focussing on our team.

But most of all I am pissed off for Tanah Boyd, who has the pressure and stress of knowing his team mate threw the dummy and walked, rather than partner Boyd in the halves (lets remove CHT from this situation and look at how Boyd must feel).

That aside, I like Luke, I like that he is going to a team that desperately needs something to pick them up.

I believe that the idea we are weakened is now in the hands of the Gods, if our icumbent halves stay fit.....then we are not weakened, Metcalf is surplus to requirements.

But most of all I am am relieved we got him out of here before he broke something else and before he dragged the dressing room down.

The Warriors invested Millions in this guys rehab, and they were patient and Loyal, but he kept breaking, and someone else cam along, it is life.

Also LOL @ Dragons fans or any other that thought we were paying baggage, next year we have literally millions of dollars in free cap space, with zero pressure to flick Metcalf plus postage, and Luke started this, not us.

The Dragons will have an exciting attack next season if this all works out, Good Luck Luke and piss off.

If the coach can be polite about him the fanz could stand to not treat him like a leper.

Drinkwater and metcalf is attacking skill behind some decent forwards.

Need to get a new coach and clean out the past it players though.

If te Marie is on the 6 man bench in first grade and the young guys are in reserve grade is there much point in even keeping him? If someone gets a serious injury then yes, but he’d be a bit of an odd insurance policy

Anyone else think we have dodged a bullet here. Hindsight is obviously massive, but I do find it odd that this guy pumps himself up as the go to guy who gets things done in big moments, yet at the same time doesn't have it in him to fight for a starting spot.

We’re better off without him now. Honestly, I wouldn’t have cared if Webby made me the ball boy for $900k. Call me a team player & show me the money 😂

It is amazing how quickly this has all occurred.

A few weeks ago it was all. How will the Warriors fit Metcalf in or how will things work moving forward. Or he'll be their 7 by the end of the year.

Webster quite rightly said he will need to bide his time as the halves are doing their job. Metcalf got the benefit of that last year when Webster said he will give them 6 weeks.

This has moved from his management wanting a meeting to discuss where they see him. To he wants to explore his options. Pretty quickly.

The quotes have been he will play 6 for the short term. The question now will he see out the season? As even playing 6 isn't guaranteed at the moment.

The quote (NZ Herald article posted earlier) from Webster is interesting. As we have discussed with some signings or announcements the last few years. The Warriors have been a tight ship. Things are announced when they are final. So it is safe to assume which side has been talking with the media.

“We’re at a stage where he’s trying to work out his future,” the coach said. “I’ve got no update on how that’s tracking.
“To see it in the media before we knew a lot about it or got to have discussions about it [was disappointing].
“His biggest thing is he wants to be sure he can explore his future. But at the same time, I know he’s very grateful for this club and loves this club.
“His future is here right now, for as long as he wants to be here.”

Now that the report of him leaving immediately has been debunked I'm chill!

Because it has been done quickly, there is limited damage done. Like Webby said, the disappointing part was that it played out in the media. If Luke is heading there for the start of the year and this year is now all about team Warriors, then I am happy enough for both him and the Dragons. I'm happy for Luke because his career is on a knife edge a bit. If he treats his team mates and fans with respect and honour then it will be reciprocated. He needs to have the attitude that he can contribute to our finals push and have a big moment for us when it counts at the end of the year.

Yeah a lot of other clubs fans were expecting the Warriors to pay freight in the forums I saw. That's a real WTF?!

Piss him off , before it becomes a massive problem. Imo.
Imagine if Boyd got concussed and we had to play met for 1 game , if he killed it, headaches , if he blows it , headaches.
Just release him guys.
100% release him now while he is healthy so they don't reneg if he gets another ACL

It would make no sense whatsoever to release Metcalf this year. Our strength is our depth and we are sitting 2nd. We’d be one Boyd injury away from being in a very similar situation to last year.

You're making massive assumption that Metcalf would be plug and play.

I would wager a large amount of money that we would tank and TMM would end up getting put in at 7, anyway.

In this years system, Metcalf is not the optimal type of 7.

The Shaun Johnson show will be interesting next week.

He was mentoring him before he retired and has rightly praised him when he was performing last year.

Now he is leaving like Johnson did. Yes, not exact circumstances but it is still work listing.

Obviously he will be diplomatic. But this will likely be one of the main topics. People have already said the show is too short. Now there is Warriors news they probably need more time.

Agree, love the show, but it’s too short. They can easily do an hour.

"We won't release him this year". That is a good position to adopt.

If he signs with the Dragons from next year I assume that means we can null and void our contract with him for 2027 onwards. if he gets injured playing for us during the rest of the year as backup to first grade or in NSW cup (or even starting if Webster decides) then the Dragons are still on the hook.

It also opens the possibility of the Dragons offering a sweetener to make it happen this year.

That big, young prop of theirs wanted away under Flanagan although he also felt he was entitled to play rather than earning it. He looks promising though when he plays.

I can't think of anyone else they have that we would want from a starter perspective. Maybe depth in centre or fullback if CNK moves on? Would Sloane be a bridge too far for the magic Webster development skill? They probably wouldn't entertain a Couchman or other young gun forwards, but you never know.

Exciting times!

I just want to see out team grind out a typical Warriors win over the entitled Broncos and I will be happy this hasn't affected us too badly, and in fact gets rid of a potential liability. Luka has the X Factor, but the risk of him not being on the field or at his best is too high, and his attitude is the final nail in the coffin for me as far as his future at the Warriors is concerned.
