General Is the Metcalf experience to halves over?

Why would you want him to change to something that doesn't come naturally to him.
He's doing great at the moment 👏
If pointing and ranting and raving doesn't come naturally, then fine, but we need someone who can do that. Otherwise at best if he's stuck with the Organising Half role, he'll be a Halves Version of AFB. Which, frankly, should at some point begin to piss any 7/Organising Half off severely.

The comparison being that to a fair number of observers more clued up in rugby league than me, AFB gets better stats - tackles, metres etc - than JFH. But JFH demands better work from his teammates (typically middles/edges, but basically whoever is involved in go-foward, so let's include our wingprops) so as a unit, JFH's unit does better than AFB's.

I think you’ve just touched on why its not important at this time for him to be overly ranting on field.

He’s learning the 7 and as someone said there was a point where Clark was getting him in place. We have the experienced players to be setting the structure and a game plan that is pretty direct and physical. If he starts moving players around when hes still learning it breaks the structure.

At end of this year or even next year we can talk about how he should be directing the team around but at this time I just want more kicks like last weekend and some running.

It might take a couple of seasons to fully mature into a well rounded halfback. That's the context that we need to think about. Metcalf will be fine, and in two years time he'll be fighting off offers.

CHT is also developing nicely, and while I would like to see a slot somewhere for TMM, I think we are starting to see a better combination developing in the first team.

It's the broken play gaps where players like TT shine, that's the balance we haven't quite got right.

Here’s that story. Luke Metcalf made Damian Lillard’s instagram
“He had complete confidence in himself... he backed his work, he works hard at it and he got the rewards.”

If Metcalf puts in the reps, he'll be a great for sure. They all talk about how he's a student of the game.

Can you give some context to this please? Who do you consider as a 'great' that he may end up compared to?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just getting more and more confident in his body each week where you can start to see glimpses of his potential after a lot of injuries. Against storm it wasn’t until late, but a nice try to get past Munster and against broncos, just cantering next to Capewell. He’s got some speed we’re lacking in our backs. Backline looks clunky and he’s being blamed largely, but many players in different positions to how all preseason would have been configured and people performing their role well as a whole I reckon for who’s having to play where

Said if before but it is good to read other people seeing the same theme with Metcalf "Improvement".

Long kicking tick.
Tackling tick.
More touches tick.

As for goal kicking, why does it have to be him? why should his goal kicking have any bearing whatsoever on whether someone plays halfback in the NRL, this isn't Rugby Union where they think only one number in a team can do a job.

I did not see anything concerning about his technique btw, people have off games with the boot, some in fact most having kicking lulls for a bunch of games. The Warriors are notorious for giving up on their kickers too readily btw.

Anyway overall he is getting better at all the skills of the position, as are for that matter all the players under Webster, every single one of them has been improved this season. I think we are very very lucky to have what we have at the Warriors top down at the moment, dunno about you but I did not think we would be anywhere near the top four after last season did you?

I can't remember who said it and may not be a 'great' yet, but someone compared his play to early Moses which I can see. He was a quick half starting out at fullback and 6 before making his way to #7.
Obviously 'early' means in reference to Metcalf being early in his NRL career rather than age.

I think ideally Metcalf would have been the 6 in 2023 and 2024, learning off SJ, gaining lots of experience and transitioning ready with a developed skillset.

Due to injuries he only played 14 games those 2 years (basically a quarter of the available games).

Now he’s down on experience and having to do a lot of learning on the job. It’s unfortunately he’s behind where the ‘plan’ would have wanted him to be but he’s a long term investment and they are sticking with it.

Which part? I can point to lots of examples in sports. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and took 2 years to get the starting gig. Cronk started as a bench utility and two years later won the Dally M. Hughes debuted in 2013 before going back down to NYC and then getting released.

Its always the guy who wants its the most, not he guy who is the most talented.

The part you didn't quote.

A question and not sure if it should be on this thread and doesn’t relate directly to Luke Metcalf
Are we practicing drop kicks under game conditions?
The best drop kicker may not be Luke - it could be Pompey or TT ??
Too often , since SJ’s departure and injuries, we’ve not had a decent drop goal kicker .
Like a lot of folk, when we went into golden point , I was thinking who is going to take the drop kick for us?
I then looked at the Broncos and thought … Reynolds, Hunt, Walsh , Walter’s ….
