What I loved most is it was all the skills. Soft hands in the wet for the rainbow pass. Big left foot step so good he put a back on their back, pure strength for the fend, then silky footwork to beat defenders in traffic with a guy hanging off him. Still has to contort and control the ball one handed for the put down.
Long sprigs in the wet helps

And we offload. And we are waiting prepared in case the carrier offloads

It’s really basic

Take the hit with your shoulder then rotate yourself another 90degrees so your front torso is literally facing our goal post, ready to offload or pass

You saw Clarke execute perfectly with the shortball to Ford but he had no defender tackling him. You can still do exactly the same thing when a tackler is on you. The best example I can think of Ali Lauitit, Ali’s unc. That guy could get a pass off even with 3 tacklers on him.

Broncos killed us in 2023 finals with that style of play. F’krrs were playing hot potatoe that day. Don’t know why it’s not taught as a basic skill. Maybe harder to do than it looks 🤷🏻‍♂️

Big red did it too with three of our blokes on him. It's ace when it works.

Not too hard to do but there are times when it shouldn't be done that we have done it and it would go to ground or worse. There are a lot of preparatory things that have happened to get this happening and working.

Don't cheat and you won't concede a six again is what it comes down to. The game became quite a hard watch when offsides and ruck infringements were going unpunished because players knew the refs were not going to stop the game to award 30 penalties.
yeah 100% - the teams that are winning are for the most part playing with a clean ruck - it's noticeable - probably on the logic that that it costs less energy to roll out of the ruck or step yourself out of the play (heading 'downtown' and resetting for the next tackle) than it does to lay in there - panthers were playing that way last night

What were you guys thinking when Strange broke the line and wondering how TT was going to save the day?

Strange just fell over seeing his shadow 😂😂 TT remains undefeated
We got some calls against roosters and early on in this one I thought this will be interesting because they weren’t getting the calls early on this week but overcame every adversity thrown at us with before game ruled out injury, in game ruled out injury and ground them into submission. There were a few times I thought they were able to score but the scramble defence was excellent. You could tell we really wanted that after what ensued last year with raiders at home and I wouldn’t be surprised if were really up for the storm game in the same manner

TT was telling RTS to stay wide with the winger who RTS had to chase and was marshalling the insidecover defence to handle the inside support all the while not planting his feet and almost corralling Strange to cut in as he back pedalled to buy time and allow RTS to regain ground on his man.
A master defender.

Tuaupiki was organising amazing calling CNK into scrums and RTS as you say. As the game went on I thought he played himself into the team. Likely will next week with CNK five eighth I wouldn’t be surprised

Only Five comments this week vs a top ten as I only casually watched this match:

1) Monty as a colour commentator is a lot of fun. After Boyd's 40 20 celebration with the wink and the finger in the air Monty goes "That's how it's done!". IE not how to kick a 40 20 but how you celebrate a 40 20. It was a you had to be there to appreciate the humour moment but very funny. Later in the match after Al's try he commented "And the South stand celebrates, don't they love this man from South Auckland", It just works what he says.

2) After the match it registered with the Raiders that they had had their pants pulled down and they were humiliated so they got into handbags with us after the final whistle. I was really proud our young boys weren't taking it and they stood up to Horsborough trying to throw his weight around.

3) Leka's try and Ford's try were elite highlight reel tries. As others have pointed out has to be asked if higher honours are in line for Jackson Ford this year. What is he Queenland or NSW?

4) Interesting factoid for those who are nerdy like me. Boyd signs autographs with his left hand but is right footed. People who are left handed are more intelligent and more creative and quite often ambidextrous with talents like Boyd ie right footed kicker.

5) Don't get too far ahead Whanau with your forecasts for this season. We have new tactics this year and are catching teams off guard with the way we are playing (eg offloads). The oppositions will study video on us and adjust. Let's see how we go, Got to at least get to Bluey's round first.

That’s a lovely compliment Wrighty, I do what Boyd does. You and I were a bit rough on Ford in the past, what do you make of his form?
