A lot of us were thinking, pre-match, that with Ashley Klein refereeing, and the video ref also having a history of ruling against us, that it wasn’t looking good. Marginal calls given against us, a rash of penalties given to change the course of the game, we’ve all known this to happen. But maybe, just maybe, things are turning for us. Two years running we’ve been pressing at the top of the ladder, the whole team is playing great, this all gives us Respect. A LOT of respect. That respect is given to us not just by the talking heads, but by the refs as well. We’re not just outsiders anymore, we’re serious contenders.

So maybe, just maybe, although yes we won that match through guts and determination, skill, strength and domination, maybe this match marks a turning point in how those margin calls play out, in when that whistle gets blown. Because there were several instances which in the past would have been given against us, we’ve all seen it, but this time they weren’t. Because (aside from just the one decision, the AKP sin binning) we were happy with the way Ashley Klein refereed us. And that's really saying something.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I think we were lucky that Taine didn't get binned after that try saver.

He held on for way too long.

I also think we were granted a little more grace with slowing down the ruck, but that's something I'd have to go back and take a look at.

Couple of disputables with the bunker too, but on brand with the rest of the weekend.

Other than that, I actually thought the reffing reflected how ill disciplined the Broncs were.

I bag the cheating refs constantly it is like a tic, tourrettes of a kind.
I know some folk get all constipated about that but yeah nah I will keep my passion and tribal nature when watching my sports thanks, clinical analysis and maturity are for people that are too scared to feel something.

But in my mind there is no doubt that we get better treatment than we used to. And it fits in line with the bias these Refs have for strong clubs vs minnows.

It all started when we went on the 7 game winning streak under Stephen Kearney, and probably what endeared us to the officials was Kearney's insistence that the Refs are not the problem, and his game plan which was the same game plan we use now, high discipline, low turn overs, very basic rugby league which is easy for a Ref to lock into and accommodate.

Webster is just a continuation of what Kearney almost pulled off, a grinding type clean, well respected basic easy to Ref footballing side that doesn't answer back or nag the ref, or play intentionally dirty.

More importantly, the Officials watch the Pressers. And they reward that attitude of Kearney and Webster, because we are modelling what they build their ideal work place models of what referees and players interactions should look like in an ideal work place.

The Officials and the Administration are responsible for work place safety for their referees, abuse and work place stress are obviously the big issues for the NRL.

Caught the replay and wow were are a relentless side. Just hit them in waves and never stopping. Donkeys had no choice but to give away penalties as they could not handle us in the middle.

I suspect if Tanah had stayed on it would have been 50 plus but TMM is MoM for me. Coming in cold expecting to warm the bench you wouldn't blame the guy if he was rusty as. He just went in an owned it. Fish and Clark were just a level above any of the Donkeys. I hope those two can stay injury free.

Will be interesting to see how LM handles the 7 which he is likely to get after the Dragons game. He needs to start training in a narrow alley as his crabbing across field will not work with how we currently play.

Another thing that really stood out was how bad Carrigan played. He was so poor I could not help but notice it. On that performance not sure how he could get picked in SOO.

I also saw this on the Donkeys forum which I found interesting. Seems people really noticing the forwards we are producing.1779059369027.webp

think i’m sticking with TMM at 7
i would have assumed he would have more likely been training as the 6 backup rather than the 7, and also hasn’t had much game time - he and chanel go well together (chanel seems to vibe with any of the 7s really) give them a couple days of training their shapes again (noticed they didn’t do the left/right split as much as chanel with tanah/metcalf, thought cht could have used the ball in his hands a bit more)

also cht nailing a sideline conversion in front of 50k people when he hasn’t goalkicked in a game since august 2024! i know he had That run of kicks that year but granted he was an 80% kicker prior to the year off, and likely didn’t practice much during the year off itself so i was very happy to see him get 2 last night

If he does he needs to not be involved in our long kicking game. Can Taine punt pretty well? We can't afford to give up easy meters on top of what teams already get with the new rules

Bit off any update on how we’re going compared to previous seasons. This time last year, we were also in second place on the ladder after round 11…. with a points diff of 5…. this season we’re 138. Last season, we’d scored 205 but conceded 200….. this season, we’ve scored 320 and conceded 182.

The best comparative year for points diff (although we were fourth on the ladder) is 2002 when, at the end of Round 11, we had a points diff of 146 (316 for and 170 against).

Not too bad to be compared to that side!!!
