A lot of us were thinking, pre-match, that with Ashley Klein refereeing, and the video ref also having a history of ruling against us, that it wasn’t looking good. Marginal calls given against us, a rash of penalties given to change the course of the game, we’ve all known this to happen. But maybe, just maybe, things are turning for us. Two years running we’ve been pressing at the top of the ladder, the whole team is playing great, this all gives us Respect. A LOT of respect. That respect is given to us not just by the talking heads, but by the refs as well. We’re not just outsiders anymore, we’re serious contenders.

So maybe, just maybe, although yes we won that match through guts and determination, skill, strength and domination, maybe this match marks a turning point in how those margin calls play out, in when that whistle gets blown. Because there were several instances which in the past would have been given against us, we’ve all seen it, but this time they weren’t. Because (aside from just the one decision, the AKP sin binning) we were happy with the way Ashley Klein refereed us. And that's really saying something.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I think we were lucky that Taine didn't get binned after that try saver.

He held on for way too long.

I also think we were granted a little more grace with slowing down the ruck, but that's something I'd have to go back and take a look at.

Couple of disputables with the bunker too, but on brand with the rest of the weekend.

Other than that, I actually thought the reffing reflected how ill disciplined the Broncs were.

I bag the cheating refs constantly it is like a tic, tourrettes of a kind.
I know some folk get all constipated about that but yeah nah I will keep my passion and tribal nature when watching my sports thanks, clinical analysis and maturity are for people that are too scared to feel something.

But in my mind there is no doubt that we get better treatment than we used to. And it fits in line with the bias these Refs have for strong clubs vs minnows.

It all started when we went on the 7 game winning streak under Stephen Kearney, and probably what endeared us to the officials was Kearney's insistence that the Refs are not the problem, and his game plan which was the same game plan we use now, high discipline, low turn overs, very basic rugby league which is easy for a Ref to lock into and accommodate.

Webster is just a continuation of what Kearney almost pulled off, a grinding type clean, well respected basic easy to Ref footballing side that doesn't answer back or nag the ref, or play intentionally dirty.

More importantly, the Officials watch the Pressers. And they reward that attitude of Kearney and Webster, because we are modelling what they build their ideal work place models of what referees and players interactions should look like in an ideal work place.

The Officials and the Administration are responsible for work place safety for their referees, abuse and work place stress are obviously the big issues for the NRL.
