My season review

An A minus
Would have been a A to reach the grand final and an A+++ to win it all

Coach:
Webster was outstanding this year in getting a team no more talented than Manly to finish 6th.

Players I am worried about
CNK he is signed to the end of 2027 yet I suspect he is cooked. Particularly from a defensive point of view as he missed a few crucial tackles. Does this mean he is our fullback to the end of 2027?
Positions we need to recruit for
I think we need an extra centre we only had three that webster trusted going into this year and two of them kept getting injured. We either need to sign someone or promote a prospect from NSW cup or a stand out from Flegg.

Green Shoots:
TMM as a bench lock prospect and maybe Gannon to play lock. I said a number of times we were lean at lock especially if Ern Clark had gotten injured. TMM tackled well enough and played well enough last night to be a credible lock - he is as big as Max Plath who frequently plays lock.

Hopes for next year
1) If Gannon turns out to be a strong NRL player from day one like the Raiders imports have been then this sures up our back row stocks considerably and gives us a better bench. I think the NRL has had a decent hit rate with English Import forwards and a shitty hit rate with English backs with the exception of Farnworth. Case in point Dodd.
2) AKP makes Titans regret they let him go.

Shadows of things from 2025 that could screw us up for next year
If Metcalf loses two shades of pace and becomes ineffective and Webster sticks by him out of loyalty and we finish 15th next year.

Where did it all go wrong this year?
I think Barnett's injury - I think we could have made do without Metcalf as our points per game was the same before and after his injury. I am really hopeful Barnett recovers well from his ACL - I think he will as who cares if Barnett loses two yards of pace over the 40 metre dash. His job is in tight and to hit it up. I see backs as being at risk in terms of their recovery profiles from ACL injuries and not forwards especially so props.

The major lessons from this year
a) Leka was not ready at any point to play 80 minutes and his mistakes last night came towards the back end of the game. We need to be mindful of our rookies more carefully in coming years from a minutes played perspective.
b) Only having three specialist centres bit us in the ass. see my earlier point. Bringing in Harper was a waste in time since Webster never trusted him to play first grade.
c) Wingers who jam and jamming edges defences are high risk
d) Fish really did pay off in terms of suring up our middle third defence and he alone was a major reason for our success this year vs 2024 and why we won so many of the close games vs losing them closely like we did in 2024. In my view.
e) That we need Barnett on the field as our captain. Fish is a good man in the sheds but on the field we did better with Barnett actively taking charge. Barnett is an extrovert and was good at getting his messages across. I saw him once talking to a referee and someone else from our team walked up to get involved and Barnett told them to jog on and the was the captain and would do the talking. The ref seemed to love it and we got good decisions the rest of that match or at least in my minds eye I romanticise that is what happened.

My advice for Webster
Just keep going - I hope you can put your feet up this summer and be happy in the knowledge our recruitment power should be easier this year than after 2024 given our higher finish this year.
I am not sure what Webster means in his press conference something is missing, A player is missing? Some training from him is missing? Our attention to detail is missing? Our fitness is missing causing us to clock off at the end of games? Whatever we are missing he says we make these crucial mistakes all the time. I hope he knows what we are missing as I don't.

My advice for the fans
Stay the course. Premiership coming soon if we don't fire Webster.

Anyone know what we are missing?

I say he means our attack. We have the defence and our attack the whole season (even with Metcalf) was merely opportunistic.

If we sharpened up our attack to complement our exceptional defence, we become contenders.

I mean honestly great season and all that

But I’m getting old and impatient

I will not be satisfied until we win it all

You guys can sit back and pat each other on the arse for a job well done this season but I expect CG, Webster and Mohawk to address the glaring issues that we need to fix next season

Everyone resting on Metcalf and Barnett being the missing ingredient are chasing after fools gold.

It remains to be seen if they come back the same players or a shell of their former selves.

We need to move on DWZ, CHT,CNK, Tannah and Marata. Mohawk can go find them jobs over in the UK. Rocco needs to medically retire. So does Egan.

I count 7 prayers.

Sounds like a major overhaul in the squad but so be it.

If I see DWZ starting again next season I will lose my shit

We came in 6th in points against and 12th for points scored. Webster is quoted as saying he wants to be number one for defence. I can see us doubling down further on defence this off season rather than offence. Just saying that to spruik conversation and not married to my comment.

I think 7 is too many and throwing out the baby with the bath water. We finished 6th this year and are not in the Knights or Titans shoes needing a major overhaul. Or do you disagree and if so why? Just creating some conversation Beastmode rather than challenging your post.

We were dead last in linebreak assists this season. Points to a very conservative gameplan with emphasis on players making things happen on their own ability. Problem is that we have very few game breakers to go with that.

Even if we inject speed into the team i dont think we know how to utilise it.

A top 6 finish again next year would be a good season based on the players we have. Somewhat concerned that roger will be 33, charnz will be 31, dallin will be 31 next year. Speed, and agility will be impacted as the players are heading towards retirement.

Of that 7, I’d say we have replacements waiting in the wings for 4 …… Ali for Berry, Metcalf for Tannah, Barnett for Marata, Healey for Egan so that leaves 3 replacements for DWZ, CHT and CNK

I hear the KP noise for DWZ so that really leaves just 2 replacements. CNK and CHT. If pressed we can keep CHT as he compliments Metcalf well

So really just ONE fresh face needed to replace CNK….. Kaylan Ponga answer CG’s phone calls !

How’s that wrighty??? Better? 👍

Obviously what we are missing is speed, pace, guys that can run fast 😉
Even Boyd made a great break last night and nobody flying off his hip to ice the try.
Happened all year. Week before it was Capewell. Leka does it every week. Demetri regularly.
No finishers.

I agree with you that a fresh and exciting full back could add to our attack. Replacing CNK either with Taine or someone else is high on my list. At this point I would be happy to have a full back pairing of TMM and Taine and moving CNK to centre for the last two years. We are desperately short at centre especially if Berry does medically retire. I don't think Berry will medically retire. However he is only signed to the end of 2026 so maybe we don't extend him after next year.

Seriously Wrighty I know that fullback is a major problem. CNK is a good fb and tries his guts out but he's never going to be a gf winning fb.
We have to find a Weekes or Kini type and this should be a priority for our recruitment team. After all Wslsh came from a local competition.

Class/spark

You can see it in the top teams vs us. They all have multiple players who can create something out of nothing.

RTS might make a break with his footwork, but other than that our pet plays are "bash and barge", "kick and hope" or "pass it to Leka".

Pass it to Leka is turning into the 2025 version of the bomb to Manu tactic and catch phrase.
In 2026 as he grows physically (he turns 20 on Sept 21st 2025) he will only become more of a try scoring threat. Also guess who scored our only try last night?

Agree 100% - I got pumped by the sign Jayden Campbell movement today in the recruitment thread until tajhay updated us Titans will resign him.

And couple aging dynamic that with Webster's loyalty to his core group of players.

This is so true! And even with metcalf and Barnett, they aren't even going to be ready to start the season next year.

Im picking we easily miss the 8 next year with this same lot.

They seem to let players contracts finish then let them go, so count your bottom dollar DWZ if fit will be the first choice winger with RTS and CNK at FB.

Why not go after a guys like Mitchell Wood. Who are the young guns, behind too players at other clubs?

Iongi has been great for parramatta, go for these types.

It was a joke… we need a new fullback!
Many successful coaches turn a blind eye to mistakes in the regular season and regard them as "mistakes will happen" or of you are stephen kearney the player apparently made no mistakes and had a strong game. Mistakes in playoffs both in ice hockey NHL playoffs and NRL seem to remembered.
Will there be consequences for Charnze being out of position for the Nathan Cleary kick and letting the ball bounce/ penrith scoring the back breaking try that Webster described as a heart breaking moment? And then added those moments and lapses of concentration seem to happen all the time to this club and "we are missing something".
Will the eye of Mordor be on Charnze in the post game review?
