2 - Trump clearly had immigration as a main plank both times he was elected and has a clear mandate to be tough on illegal immigrants

It’s increasingly clear that the administration has set unreasonable goals for deportations, which have had at least two highly deleterious impacts. First, the drive for numbers has led agents to pursue cases involving babies and grandmothers, instead of the dangerous criminals Trump has promised to get off the streets. Last December, the CATO Institute reported that only 5% of the people ICE detained had convictions for violent crimes and 73% had no convictions at all. Second, because the agency is apparently counting arrests, not actual deportations, agents seem to be arresting first and only subsequently checking to see if the detainee is an American citizen or someone who is otherwise permitted to remain in the country.

Do they? I would say every individual makes their own informed decision on that. It might be an unlawful decision, but not necessarily immoral.

And I’m somewhere in the middle on border policy. The US has more or less created this problem for itself with its foreign policy, so I’m not inclined to give it much leeway in going authoritarian on the issue. Masked thugs on the streets can gtfo.

I agree with this.

The issue is when lots of individually correct decisions snowball and overload available capacity. You can’t have a free for all.

That’s for the voters to decide, not the immigrants.
