Politics 🤡 Donald Trump

I don't think it was dalliance with NATO primarily. There were two massive energy deals in planning prior to the 2014 and 2022 invasions that would've put Ukraine in direct competition to Russia's energy supply to Europe. And Ukraine shares a lot more history with Russia than the other countries on their border. Shit, Finland already faced a Russian invasion, they inflicted huge losses but still had to concede 10% of their land. Similar to this war I guess. Sad for all IMO.

I was just going off this article citing the reasoning to be around the threat of nato. I’m sure there are many complicated factors but the energy mention you make still doesn’t justify their invasion in my view

How many times has Putin said that NATO in those countries is a redline? Comparing random European countries to Ukraine is disingenuous at best. The administrative capital of Russia was never in Warsaw.
They aren’t random, they share a border with Russia and are nato members? They may not have been apart of what Ukraine once was to Russia, but they are exactly what Russia is using as their motivation. NATO members on their doorstep in the article you provided

Okay so we’ve narrowed the frame from “Putin is a threat to Europe” to “Putin is a threat to countries that share a border”

When has he issued threats that those countries weren’t allowed NATO? It’s seems to me Russia has tolerated continuous expansion right up to its borders.

Has there been a declaration that Poland in NATO is a red line?

I don't think anyone in their right mind justifies the invasion, or any invasions for that matter. You could argue that all of the US invasions in the last century have been unjustified.

Doesn't justify it in any moral sense but the gas fields and resources could be enough reason for the invasion after the 2014 CIA coup. If you accept they're both criminal enterprises fighting over who gets to launder the trillions, but I don't really know if it's that's simple.

That's what I mean, send some of the border defence to the war and those crazy Kazaks will start plotting!

What threatens Russia's future more, new competition to their primary export or Ukraine flirting with NATO?

The article you provided states Putin saying the threat of nato moving east and military infrastructure on their borders to justify the invasion, but those already exist in the members already that they share a border with. It gives me the impression of trump pardoning the former Honduras president on drug trafficking charges while going after Maduro for the same thing

Don't know what the long game is, or why Putin would risk war with Europe when so much dark money has flowed there through his oligarchs, Trump's real estate enterprises for one. I assume it's the same with the Americans in Ukraine, like when Hunter Biden and half the CIA got jobs on the Burisma board.

Then you don’t really understand nation states, or even Russia. Let’s circle back to in how many other NATO countries did the Russian capital exist?

Just because you aren’t interested in the historical significance of Kiev to Russia; doesn’t mean it’s not. Also harping on about “other countries in NATO” as if 1 Russia wasn’t promised it wouldn’t happen and 2 they voiced their displeasure and said that Ukraine would be a redline.

If “redline” in geopolitics needs clarification for you, it means someone strongly disagrees with actions up to certain point, but has identified a specific action that will force them into a response.

The key word you mentioned to the significance of Kiev to Russia is historical, history. If the Ukrainian people had an appetite to return to Russian territories that would be different, but they don’t
