I was expecting all the usual lefties to be criticising the budget but… crickets. Well done National!

Nothing exciting but nothing wrong really. Good solid governance and will win a lot of middle voters with the sound economic management. Health, education big winners.

What’s Labour going to do? Tax and spend up large, buying votes? Haven’t we seen enough of that and know it makes us worst in the long term? What we could have done with that $10b in interest payments!

National have snookered Labour, health, education and environment sorted with all the money reallocated and spent. Now Labour need to make decisions on free fees, superannuation, fair pay vs wrecking the potential surplus.

It's definitely a safe, politically smart budget. Reining in wasteful department spending to protect health and education is great, but it's just another 'keeping the lights on' budget. Simply matching inflation for frontline services doesn't fix a stagnant economy and leaning heavily on regulatory reform to save us by 2050 is a slow burning fuse when there are immediate infrastructure and productivity crises right now.

I am surprised you are happy with it as there is no headroom for high value innovation leading to more long term stagnation and no wins for productivity. It's probably a smart election year budget but means nothing for the future of the country.
