well, those are both fair points, my preference would actually be user pays super. So no state funded super, and employer-matched KiwiSaver at whatever level is necessary to provide for the retirement people want to enjoy

No KiwiSaver withdrawals until you wish to retire (ie no withdrawals to buy a house etc)

But that’s just me. User pays.

Otherwise, super is just a state-administered Ponzi scheme

Like, if someone does a job, any job, why should the younger generation pay them when they turn 65-70? Shouldn’t their lifestyle be funded by them and their family?

My mother who s 100 this year retired and went on a pension at 60

But isn’t that a good reason to increase the age from 65 to 70? Why should taxpayers fork out for 40 years?

15000/20000 of that was taxed at 50 per cent
Where did that money go?
It was funding all the free services that Gen Z got before starting work.
Not all of us can get to a position where we can survive on our own capital when we retire

I would phase it out, so all workers receive what they signed up for. Starting with 18 year olds this year.

So retirees would still receive what they thought they’d receive etc

Precisely. With those halfway through their working life (42year olds) would only qualify for 50% etc

In any case, I’m not entering politics, so no need to be concerned

I just think politicians need to suck it up and do something, otherwise the whole thing falls over in a few decades

Raising the retirement age is tactical.

National can use those savings to fund a lolly scramble while still getting the books in order.

If Labour opposes it, they face meeting all their existing obligations like fair pay agreements and look fiscally irresponsible. Tax, tax, tax!
