Once EV vehicles become the norm (not in my lifetime unless there are extensive subsidies) it might be a different picture but throwing a few chargers on the roadside isn't going to help sell any more EV's IMO

Now, if they spent the money on Biodiesel I could be more interested. We use around 16,000 litres a year depending on whether we run Maize.

Yes, can't deny oil is declining but still a few reserves left, more coal than oil which will be useful later when electricity prices increase, which they seem to with rapid abandon.

That's one way of spinning it.

It's better than nothing.

It doesn't address the hundreds of thousands on benefits, low wage incomes etc.

You isolate a billionaires Bentley, but the fuel tax cut was universal for exceptional times.

There's nothing to stop landlords going "Great time to put the rents up!". Present company excepted.

This smacks of doing the least possible for the best optics.

Bit of flawed logic here. Just because 18 billionaires also got $25 off, the ~4 million people (estimated adult pop) in New Zealand who also got it would be pretty thankful in comparison to the 140k families here.

Don't fault the government for doing something though.

The oil shock is a supply problem. The price needs to go up to change people’s behaviour, lower demand and avert an even bigger crisis.

Cash makes people happy but makes the crisis WORSE because people will buy more fuel, forcing prices even higher.

Election year… they should have subsidised public transport.
