Agree 100% with Bernard Hickey. We need to get more self sufficient and quickly as a country.

So Bernard lives out in the sticks, only has a wood fire for heating and cooking. Relies on tallow candles and rides his horse to work?

These people have never done any hard yards in their life but continue to proselytise how the rest of us should live ours

Sounds to me like he may have shares in Tesla and anything electric from China

Glad he said In my view. :ROFLMAO:

You sound like the zb right wing talkback caller you are Rick.

TBF, most people in/around politics are insufferable. It isn’t a surprise that they end up on the dance floor together, once all the normal people have left
My cousin was telling her that he used have a beer with Seymour on a regular basis
Said he was a pretty good drinking buddy until the subject of politics came up
He said he turned into a fn pest.
I can imagine

It is shit like this that confirms to me that we are doomed. Who are "these people"?

You are already being told how to live your life. You are a slave to fossil fuels and reliant on the vague-aries of international trade. If that isn't screamingly obvious at the moment then I don't know what to say.

And a slave to the past. Some godforsaken redneck 1970s dodgy mustache in a basement full of stick mags rugby with yer mates but only a certain type of mate past.

Bernard's got far more integrity, intelligence, eloquence and accuracy than 99.9 % of us on here. One day you'll understand. Maybe.

One of the major problems is that NZ doesn't have in place a non-oil/coal based generating back up system for dry periods (hydro), night (solar) and lack of wind. While providing the renewables we have is very good, it should have been in conjunction with either CNG generation (the "cleanest" fossil-based system) or hydro battery (not a very economical solution as a large percentage of the power generated is then spent plumping the water back to the top lake) or battery storage (but that still needs backing up when it "goes flat"). Of these three, CNG would also keep prices down as the spot price from it is cheaper than the other two opinions.

If the superhot geothermal generation is successful, that would certainly help but then would we be over generating if we flooded the country with solar panels and turbines.

We're decided that we can solve the problem with one solution (renewables) without allowing, from the beginning of solar/wind generation the other side of the coin.... what to do when we can't generate enough power from them.

Ironically, with every passing month we are cede-ing the future to China, because they have identified the green technologies that will be needed and are investing in them from both the top-down and the bottom-up. Conservatives love to shit on China but they are laying out the red carpet for them.

Agree, and we need to approach many different solutions now, allowing us to a) break the reliance on fossil fuels and b) diversity allowing alternate sources should one fail

Yes siree Bob, that's why they are only 2nd to India in building Coal fired power stations

Mike 12. It's about time, which we don't have. people banging on about Green and renewables don't understand that green power is the least of our problems.

The issue is energy per se and renewables can't and will never be able to fill the void from fossil fuels
