What's not being talked about in the public statements is the unworkability of public transport in Auckland. It's extremely poor in many areas, including the one where I live - I head in very early in a car (hybrid for all those on the right about to scream on their keyboards) which takes 30 mins approx for an 18km journey, and I pay just under 20 for parking. I also have to leave early to miss the traffic. So Wayne Brown doesnβt think Aucklanders going over the current harbour bridge or second harbour crossing should pay a toll of $9 (which apparently is the inflation adjusted amount from when the bridge was first tolled). Yet, he thought it was okay to collect money from a regional wide petrol tax and wants too charge a congestion tax for those silly enough to drive into the CBD at the wrong time off the day.
Difference? The bridge toll would go too central government while the other two are/were money for council.
Aha, so you do work for AT and were directly responsible for the cameras in Bus Lanes. What's not being talked about in the public statements is the unworkability of public transport in Auckland. My area is not serviced well by public transport, and the office is located outside the cbd, so one way on public transport takes 1hr 45 and costs $9. One way. $18 in total
So taxing the only way that people can travel realistically in Auckland, which is cars in part because of the nimbyism against delivery of good public transport and in large part to the road lobby and oil and gas lobby, and offering no alternative is yet another punishment and tax on those who can afford it the least.
And then I hear the idiotic calls to force everyone into the office, and yes, these have come from those on the right, in a city which is already choked, does not have enough office space, etc etc. For no rational reason other than subjugation.
Whereas most of us adults are actually more productive working from home and very happy to go in one day a week to an office that can't hold all of us anyway.
The decades of underinvestment and outright hostility to well planned public transport, that we're seeing repeated against non petrol cars have led us to this point.

Ps, Loved the subjugation bit
Auckland is somewhat screwed fo transportation options being in a Z shape arounds 2 massive harboursWhat's not being talked about in the public statements is the unworkability of public transport in Auckland. Auckland needs to prioritise light rail routes and massively intensify those areas. Density makes public transport work. Auckland canβt physically build an adequate public transport to all existing spread out suburbs and has to rely on poor fitting bus services to fill a gap. What's not being talked about in the public statements is the unworkability of public transport in Auckland. I'm kinda guessing that last statement is trollingAuckland needs to prioritise light rail routes and massively intensify those areas. Density makes public transport work. Auckland future must be planning forward with density and transport option in the right places not trying to fix past mistakes.
Ps. Cycle lanes are the dumbest waste of effort in both cost per user and injury/ H&S
Road toll last year - 10 out of 272 deaths were cyclists with cyclist only accounting for less than 2% of all journeys, cycling is very, very hazardous - which makes sense really!I'm kinda guessing that last statement is trolling

Weβre not Amsterdam!
Cost:
According to analyses around Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency projects:
Busy urban cycleways can reach $0.20β$0.60 per trip
Low-use cycleways can exceed $2β$5 per trip
Major roads typically sit around $0.05β$0.20 per vehicle trip
Best case roads/ cycle lanes costs are similar but we all know cycle lanes ALWAYS are low use in NZ bar 1 or 2
Hard to argue with facts, please stick with emotive arguments only please.Road toll last year - 10 out of 272 deaths were cyclists with cyclist only accounting for less than 2% of all journeys, cycling is very, very hazardous - which makes sense really!

Alternatively, cycling doesnβt make any sense. I honestly donβt know why interest groups are pushing it.Yawn
It's a right wing axe to grind that belongs with the road lobby
Ooooh, okay then #SARCASMFORINRUINHard to argue with facts, please stick with emotive arguments only please.
Some facts thenAlternatively, cycling doesnβt make any sense. I honestly donβt know why interest groups are pushing it.
Itβs not safe or cheap. Cycling should be off road, on footpaths. The sport side shouldnβt use roads, which are for transport.
This is the problem when politics backs special interest groups to build support. The underlying concept isnβt thought through, political parties just back them against all sense and logic forβ¦ votes.
And cyclists keep dying at a far, far higher rate. Some facts then
1. Wiz has always had it in for cycles, and always will
2. Wiz deflects frequently, particularly when there's a current government failure (very often) or he's on the losing side of something (ditto)
3. Wiz, and probably Inruin, love 1ZB
4. Wiz has frequently displayed a high level of entitlement and ignorance around his road use and what is actually legal.
5. "Why should I" often appears in his arguments
6. There are no links in any of Wiz's comments. Again.
7. Cycling is exceedingly healthy
8. A lot of the danger comes from entitled selfish motorists who think that they and only they are the gifted users of the roads.
9. They're not. Cyclists are legal road users as part of the road code
10. Cycling consumes no petrol
11. Cycling takes car drivers off the road
12. Cycling doesn't damage the roads
13. Cycling is 1% of the transport budget - https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/politica...uff-in-government-s-big-budget-transport-plan
And on. And on. And on.
Homelessness is directly correlated with folks thrown out of emergency housing, and rehab/mental health services being cut.
Both of which this government has carried out deliberately.
Now, these people get arrested and/or moved on. To......where? Somewhere else on the streets, out of the view of the media.
This is classic "doing something for the sake of looking like we're doing something" where all outcomes will be bad instead of addressing the core issues.

Far far higher rate compared to what? And cyclists keep dying at a far, far higher rate.
Under H&S legislation they should be banned as an unsafe mode of transport, just like smoking is being phased out.

As many on here have posted, thereβs no need for people to be living on the streets and housing is available.
For many, homelessness is a choice and they can do it out of the city centres.
