Great post.

β€˜New Zealand spending more than almost anyone else in the OECD on infrastructure β€” while getting some of the worst results.

The core finding is blunt. New Zealand spends around 5.8% of GDP on infrastructure each year, over $20 billion, one of the highest rates in the developed world. Yet the country ranks near the bottom for efficiency.’

Really highlight the let’s tax more 🫣 vs let’s increase productivity and efficiency 😍 argument.

Do we spend more due to location?
Do you mean location in the world, probably. Location of the infrastructure not so much. Part of the problem as I see it is that we have a small population spread over a reasonably large land area (think Japan/UK) with poor transport facilities. Think hospitals for example. Do we really need a hospital in Whakatane when there are large hospitals in Tauranga/Rotorua and Hamilton. Knock off travelling time with better access facilities and it makes sense.

The main point though that Edwards makes is that we tend to concentrate on new infrastructure rather than fix properly what is already there, plus we don't manage the work properly.

Call it lobbying or if you're T8, corruption, it does exist and is an impediment. We simply don't get value for our money spent and there is no accountability within Govt departments and agencies to ensure proper management of infrastructure works by contractors

"New Zealand spends the most in the OECD on infrastructure and gets among the worst results. The industry benefits from cost blowouts and perpetual project churn. The consultants and contractors feast on the boom-bust cycle. The lobby groups write the policy papers, sit on the advisory boards, and then profit from the decisions. Meanwhile, the public gets sewage in the harbour, crumbling hospitals, and potholed roads."

I'm getting tired with all these links

Kiwiblog? Jaysis you might as well be quoting Cameron Slater direct

All this stuff is factual huh? It all looks hard right to me.
Since when does a rugby league forum Politics thread ever deal in facts. ;)

And, certainly wouldn't consider against the current to be right wing blog.

I always thought Slater and Bomber were a good riposte.

Thoughts on Bryce's slightly left leaning article on Infrastructure?

"When interviewed about the State of Origin, Christopher Luxon said that he fondly remembered his parents letting him stay up late to watch it as a kid.
One problem
The first live broadcast of State of Origin in New Zealand was in 1989, when Christopher Luxon was 19 years old.
So either Christopher Luxon still had a bedtime when he was 19 β€” which, to be fair, might be true β€” or, and this is the most likely scenario, he has been caught in a very embarrassing lie"

β€˜Francis found the Teaching Council was more focused on β€œbuilding the mana” of teachers and β€œbeing liked by the profession” than on fulfilling its core regulatory functions.’

My wife as a centre manager had an issue with a teacher that warranted reporting to the teachers council. The teacher had preempted contacting them and explaining her side and the teachers council didn’t want to hear the person in authority that had all the information and the complete picture and told my wife they had investigated and cleared the teacher…. While only hearing one side of the case.

Unbelievable, but makes sense in the context of the issues now coming to light.

A similar thing happened on MAFS last night when Mel complained to the girls about Luke’s behaviour

It was only Stella that called her out about there being two sides to every story

There's a number of builders I've come across who I'd have no hesitation getting them to do a "new build" for me.... but there's no way I'd have them do any alterations or additions above a "mild" complexity.... they just don't have the experience. If you're looking at doing something on anything over 80 years old, look for the oldest builder, preferably with a near-broken back, who is just about to go into a retirement village... chances are, he'll know what he's doing!!!

And don’t moan at the speed he’s able to work and what it’s costing on an hourly rate
