A bystander without full knowledge of the situation criticises those in authority for making a decision based on the knowledge they have or the advice they have been given.Probably not public knowledge to those outside Tauranga, about the slip. The site could easily be contained within the camp ground, especially after it moved from an urgent life saving mission to a body recovery⦠but:
- 4 roads have been blocked or partially blocked off
- shops, including 13 hospitality businesses within the cordon and estimated about 200 workers are closed and inaccessible.
- all homes and apartments have been closed to access within the cordon affecting 1000βs of people requiring alternative accomodation
- the main beach has been half closed despite being several hundred meters from the slip
- council reserves eg Mt Drury aren't open and the reserve on the other side of the shops had to shut closing their markets.
There is no info coming out on whatβs happening, there is no H&S reason for everything to be closed, this is a peak long weekend. While itβs a tragedy, it can be contained without making others suffer.
The camp can easily be blocked off and everything done from within there. Again if this was a car crash with 6 dead, it would have been opened up within hours. Obviously a tragedy but this can be contained within the camp.

Reminds me of the criticism of the Ardern government at Covid time
Those in authority have consistently said nothing. Then complain about rumours or people with a vested interest getting upset. As the article says, the communication to those affected has been very unprofessional.A bystander without full knowledge of the situation criticises those in authority for making a decision based on the knowledge they have or the advice they have been given.

Itβs your assumption that they are not weighing up all factors. Those in authority have consistently said nothing. Then complain about rumours or people with a vested interest getting upset. As the article says, the communication to those affected has been very unprofessional.
The roads around the camp are not closed for H&S reasons (eg residents are ok to stay but once you leave the border they will not let you back in). Itβs just for convenience, which when weighing all affected (residents and businesses) is not justified when the camp can be easily isolated.
And yes, this reminds me of the last prolonged lockdown that was the nail in the coffin for Ardern - taking the easiest option for those in charge, rather than governing for all and weighing all factors.
Obviously the police, search and rescue and the victims families are a strong voice in decision making prioritising for themselves. All the residents and businesses are locked out and ignored. Whereβs their voice? Very Ardern.
Interesting we had two posters peddling this rhetoric instantly here - but the PM of the most anti mΔori government in generations can be reasonable.
Uppercuts yourselves.
Luxon asks those spreading 'misinformation' about landslide to 'keep it to themselves
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he is aware of "misinformation" being spread following the Mount Maunganui landslide and is calling on people to "keep it to themselves".
Luxon spoke to media this morning during a visit to a local community centre, which has been erected to support residents and to provide a space where goods could be dropped off.
Earlier, the PM participated in a blessing at the landslide site alongside families of the six missing people and later had meetings with family members, before visiting the centre.
Asked if he had been aware of racist rhetoric being spread, Luxon acknowledged that promotion of mistruths was not uncommon following natural disasters.
"I'm aware there's a lot of misinformation and stuff going on out there, there always is in circumstances like this.
"Some members of the public have speculated whether the removal of trees on Mauao in recent years for the protection of culturally significant sites and for restoration purposes contributed to last weekβs slip. Mauao is co-managed by the local council and iwi groups.
"There will be plenty of time for us to have a proper process and proper questions about a bunch of things but right here, right now, we need to stay together and support each other," Luxon said.
"The people on the margins with their rhetoric, they just need to, frankly, keep it to themselves."
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell characterised those spreading misinformation as "trolls" and didnβt believe they reflected most New Zealanders.
"My reflection on having been minister now for two years, I've had 24 local states [of] emergency, iwi and hapΕ« know how to do emergency management, they're outstanding, they step up every time, and for everyone, for the whole communit

Reports of some people circumventing the cordons so they can walk on the Mount. Not only disrespectful but a nuisance for those who are still involved with the ongoing issues thereItβs your assumption that they are not weighing up all factors.
If youβre strong in your view no doubt weβll see you on TVOne news tonight holding a placard at the scene or are you just one of the many keyboard warriors.
I am picking the coming year to be a particularly nasty political shit fightLast week, the Taxpayer Union poll had the coalition ahead by 6 seats but today's RNZ Reid poll has them only having a one seat majority.
The only one that really matters is the one held on 7 November.

Pretty certain Wiz that the authorities police rescuers and frontline medical staff will have a better understanding of what is happening and what is needed for safety security and urgency than any part of the media. You do realise I posted based on a herald article quoting all the businesses affectedβ¦
You do realise mediaβs job is to hold authority to account and ask the questions that arenβt being answeredβ¦
I hear some volatile posters want to cancel culture people with these views, in typical left fashion. They are all in the article, or is he just a keyboard warrior![]()
Not only that - the business owners quote were asking for financial relief and better communication from the council - not for the roads to be reopened. Pretty gross to even think this out loud with people still unaccounted for.Pretty certain Wiz that the authorities police rescuers and frontline medical staff will have a better understanding of what is happening and what is needed for safety security and urgency than any part of the media.
Well the communication is poor.Pretty certain Wiz that the authorities police rescuers and frontline medical staff will have a better understanding of what is happening and what is needed for safety security and urgency than any part of the media.
I am sure they are doing their best to find and recover the others while keeping the rescuers safe when more slips are probably ready to occur. The last thing we need at the moment is even more tragedies.Well the communication is poor.
How many bodies have been recovered? How many more to find? Whatβs a timeline?
Basic question that address concerns of interested parties instead of saying nothing then bitching and moaning when rumours fill the massive gaps.
I want Ardern back, who actually communicated whatβs happening![]()
It is going to get a lot worse. Winston has probably been seeing one of those singing tutors to get tips on maintaining his voice. We have had 30+ years of this, we know he will be the loudest.I am picking the coming year to be a particularly nasty political shit fight
