Running the numbers on public service PR
It's not news that people doing PR and communications for the state heavily outnumber the journalists who report on the agencies employing them. And journalists know most of those on 'the dark side' get fatter paypackets than they do. But the numbers crunched by RNZ's Phil Pennington shows the...www.rnz.co.nz

Surely you don't believe the doctors might be misleading us when they say that their pay raise wouldn't cover inflation? You don’t seriously believe the average pay for senior doctors & dentists is nearly $1m do you?
Yeah I know the calcs, although won’t be 12 months, but they’ve got the numbers wrong somewhere, my guess would be the time the $160m funding increase is spent over - mentions 16 months but must be a lot longer than that. Same articles mentioning average senior pay is ~$350k which the industry is saying overstates their pay.Surely you don't believe the doctors might be misleading us when they say that their pay raise wouldn't cover inflation?
$160,000,000 pay offer/5,500 senior doctors and dentists = $29,029 average pay increase. This means that for them to offered an average of $29,090 PA, at 3% inflation, they are on an average of just under $970,000 PA. If the average they were on was $750,000 PA, then they are working out at an inflation figure of just under 4% to get an average increase of $29,090... since they say they're effectively taking a pay cut when you consider what has been offered to inflation.
Go down to the average being $500,000 PA, and that works out it 5.8% inflation (29,029/500,000 x 100 = 5.8%).
Go down to the average being $250,000 PA and that works out at 11.6% inflation (29,029/250,000 x 100 = 11.6%).
Go down to the average being $200,000 PA and that works out at 14.5% inflation.
So, if they think they are "right" with what they're saying, it's good they decided to become doctors and dentists and not accountants or economists!!!
You're also forgetting that the SMO's also includes surgeons, cardiologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists etc. It's not the "senior doctor" on the ward... these are the top specialists in their fields.

Apparently, the sixteen months is for the time they've been negotiating... if the offer had been accepted earlier, inflation would not be so much of an issue. Even then, inflation for the last 18 months (16 months doesn't seem to be readily available) is 3.65%, figures from tradingeconomics.com via Copilot.Yeah I know the calcs, although won’t be 12 months, but they’ve got the numbers wrong somewhere, my guess would be the time the $160m funding increase is spent over - mentions 16 months but must be a lot longer than that. How good would our health system be if we had 5,500 specialists (although even then they don’t average that sort of money)!Apparently, the sixteen months is for the time they've been negotiating... if the offer had been accepted earlier, inflation would not be so much of an issue. Also, the highest band for a junior doctor is Registrar PGY7-10 (advanced training) who are on between $180,000-247,000 PA while a first year specialist is on $200,000 (because they're PGY8) and a specialist is on $345,000 after year 3 and the skies the limit after that.
Latest figures show that we're around 1,500 specialists/senior doctors short in the public system. How good would our health system be if we had 5,500 specialists (although even then they don’t average that sort of money)!
Gee I wonder why we're short that many specialists? Could be the deliberate running down of the health system by this government with an aim to privatise. Could be consecutive governments under financing our public health system with conditions becoming intolerable?Latest figures show that we're around 1,500 specialists/senior doctors short in the public system.
Gee, I wonder why we need a new Medical School and why the Government is looking at speeding up the processing of overseas medical professionals wanting to come here?
The same doctor shortage was under Labour, before the evil coalition, privatisation, etc. Everyone knows this…Gee I wonder why we're short that many specialists? What I find interesting about this is that it seems very similar to David Seymour when he didn't declare properties that were owned by trusts he had so interest in. You'd have thought that Bates would have seen what had happened to Seymour and declared them anyway.Stuff
