Yes Rick and in my situation I am in my late 70's and work from home so it's not a petrol thing for me but I'm getting absolutely nothing.

Like most populists JN, they would look at the polls, focus groups etc etc and then decide what they think will get them the most likes. (Votes)
What they forget is that no one likes them anyway
On a serious note I have been told that NZ Healthcare workers are being more selective of their jobs as they do get a travel allowance but it needs to increase given the current situation. That's fair enough imo
Might just be something that Willis has overlooked but unfortunately some people who rely on this service for food health care and cleanliness issues will be stuck at home with no assistance

I hear Willis saying she can't adjust the benefits because the law states how much they should get and it's fixed in the Budget. Somehow, I don't think the parties on the left would have opposed a "one off" change to the benefit legislation for this year to allow extra for the current petrol pricing.
Personally, while I wouldn't want to see it being a "universal" payment/petrol tax reduction, I do think it should have had a broader target.

In the 30's during the great depression probably. Roosevelt essentially laid the platform for a Governments role in assisting during tough financial times.

Agree the govt should assist in a counter cyclical manner - eg pump money into the economy during bad times and ease off during good times.
Problem is threading off but doesn’t happen. Costs are locked into future budget. Since Covid we’ve run at a loss, borrowed and have reduced capacity to handle the next economic shock.

I grew up in NZ in the 80-2000s. I distinctly remember a time when the budget was boring dry fiscal policy. At some point it changed to “what am I getting”
There is a couple of exceptions to the PT myth.
Auckland say between GlenInnes Onehunga Mt Albert City area is actually very well served.
I di three days in Auckland up till Monday and didnt use a car -20 bus and train trips for $49.50.
I was a bit miffed on missing Auckland Transports fifity dollar seven day fare cap.

Should have clarified Kos. Was referring to PT between centres. While there are buses and aircraft available, the price and schedules can be unsuitable. One of the disadvantages of living in a country where the population is small and spread out.
City wise, it's ok, even down here the bus service is pretty good
West Auckland is a black hole in parts. 35 mins by car before 6am, public transport from where I am to where I work is 1 hr 45 one way

It peaked around the same price about a week ago (~$112).
In 2022 there was no media silence, in fact the public and media outcry over the fuel prices was so intense the Labour government announced the emergency 25c/l cut to the fuel excise tax. Arguably they were more focused on it than it is now..

From memory, the pricing in the mid 2000s was up around $140 a barrel. This initiated a few drilling programmes here at that time.

My point is fuel price is annoying but we’re talking ourselves into a recession.
We’ve had higher price during covid and the GFC and it goes back down again.
I’m seeing people like builders where fuel might rise $40pw on a turnover of several thousands per week saying they are going to have to increase prices. BS!
People panicking are walking us into higher inflation and an economic slump.
2022 we never talked about how many days of fuel left. It had much less media coverage and was more just part of overall inflation at about 7% under Labour, hitting everyone hard (inflation running at double now).
