International Pacific Championship

The fact they will lose Paps n Katoa and you think they will still be competitive unless they lose someone else says a lot about the storm system.

I think as well, if you're a fringe player like Katoa (lol) or Blore were, being coached by Bellamy and having Paps, Munster, Hughes and Grant alongside you makes it an easy decision if you're being offered similar money from Storm or a few other teams.

If Storm are average next year, talk of Bellamy leaving and both Hughes and Munster in their last few years with no ace up their sleeve like Pezet, are they still the easy choice?

Maybe not. Maybe they struggle to sign those average to decent players on less coin like Stefano, Katoa and Blore, they might not appear to be the destination they currently are.

I imagine they will still have similar systems in place which as you mention have been great, but yeah, maybe that shine doesn't look as shiney in the near future

I thought the Storm would decline when Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk aged.... Nope!

First time I have heard from the bloke.

He is a really bright guy.

We seem to have a number of smart men who happen to be footballers in this generation.

His family must be so proud of him.

Difficult subject to speak out on when you are in the spotlight and have to live in the community.

He spoke with courage and conviction. Certainly someone to be admired.

I dunno what he is doing post footy career wise, but he is someone that would be good to see being utilized at Penrose.
I believe his brother is Matt Brown, author of She's not your rehab (really good read btw). Pretty wild childhood if that's the case.

Just read a comment on Tik tok from someone that's had a similar injury from what I understand. They're saying he's likely never playing again.
Here's the video.
Might have to open the app to read the comments.

Part of the problem is how long they waited to get assessed and treatment (I am discounting the sideline assessments as unreliable here because in functional terms they were inadequate, they did not pick up the problem).

Time delays and repeated blows.

People routinely recover fully though, but his was not a routine presentation.

Still it could be worse, he could have been a park footy player that slipped away quietly on the couch at home with no one seeing the seizures.

I saw an article earlier that they compare it to the Alex McKinnon situation and say it’ll change the game

I got into a fight at a club one night and knocked out. To this day all I can recollect was sitting outside what seemed like I was sitting normally and people asking if I was ok. I couldn’t understand why they were asking because I remembered nothing and felt no soreness so clean was the hit. Funny thing the brain

I had a friend who died on the field when he was 15.
To this day I couldn’t tell u the cause- he just copped a massive hit and never got up- still visit his grave every-time I go home.
Accidents can happen in any walk of life but the disappointing thing with the katoa one is that it could’ve and should’ve been avoided.

The NRL signalling is that this is a major incident, given they are delaying releasing their findings till after the player leaves hospital.

That latest Tic Tok photo with a hat on and tee shirt, looking good smiling is encouraging.
I would have been happier if it was a photo of him standing.

Obviously the NRL will have to mandate medical eyes on players during warm ups (should have been a thing already, might have been a thing).

That can't be the NRL independent Doctor because they cannot watch both warm ups at once. It will have to be the team Doctor (probably gonna be mandatory they are on field during warm ups).

As for whether they can radically change anything else I doubt it, given they are supposed to be operating under best practice guidelines already.

Also we have to remember that had they followed the protocol to the letter this would have turned out a lot better '(that warm up clash was a CAT 1).

So the rules already exist to protect the player, it was people that did not apply them.

I suspected they might knee jerk react for the finals, but they didn't, Dylan Brown got a head cut and stayed on the field.

Also if the NRL had of found some radical new protocol it would have been rushed out for the final.....

I am not saying they are not going to react...I just wonder how and especially whether changes will be effective.

The issue to me is that in representative and finals games, the desire to play steps up as they are career highlight games. The ultimate honour. Games legends are made. Games the NRL want their stars.

We all know in these games the refs allow things differently and players play through minor injury that normally they wouldn’t. Even the NRL don’t send players off for the same head high tackle that’s been a send off all season; or allow players to play finals, avoiding suspension over incidents because it’s finals. I guarantee the Katoa three head knocks doesn’t happen in a usual club match.

I suspect everyone, including the trainers and Katoa himself consciously ignored the right thing to do because of the occasion. The NRL has actually set that standard and culture by things like letting Reece Walsh play when he should have been banned. Finals and internationals are different…

It’s only in hindsight that everyone, including the NRL have gone - oops.

So the only solution to me is the NRL must lead by giving consistency to finals and representative games in officiating and prioritisation of the rules.
