Sports Black Caps

In comparison I thought Brendon Julian was brilliant.Great insight & knowledge of the game at all stages
It was a breath of fresh air to have BJ in the mix.
But I almost have to mute it with the others, especially Katy Martin.
Not because she’s a female, Isa Guha is one of my favourite commentators.
She is just so damn boring to listen too.

I think all of them (apart from Scotty Stevenson) have insight and know the game but dont have the balance of character and more importantly in a commentary team......chemistry.
Ian Smith has that great ability to get that balance right between character, chemistry and knowledge of the game. Doesn't seem to matter if he is on radio, on TV, with a kiwi crew or an overseas one. Just really good to listen to.

He had that quality when he was commentating Rugby as well which just proves u dont have to have been a great or even played the sport to be a good commentator.

The Aussies we're smart getting him for their cricket and know how to put a "team" together. Brendon Julians a bit more serious and provides insight and knowledge, Skull is almost comic relief, while Smithy balances both but can banter with the best of them.

None better than Senz this summer tho imo if your looking for Banter and chemistry......Coney, Smithy, Bracewell.....it was a joy listening to those guys bounce off each other,

I mentioned the same thing the other day.
Got shit canned. 😆 🤣

you got 4 good days of play in with pretty good weather. I am more than a little envious. What was the crowd like? Seemed to be a good mix of people there and in good spirits.
3.33 :) Yeah it was pretty good weather, bloody cold on the first day though - 14 degrees in the shade.

Lots of good natured aussies, and everyone pretty well behaved.

Very impressed with the aussie cricket team tbh, never thought I'd say that! Sans warner I actually don't mind them

It was honestly fun and interesting to watch, even though the kiwi performance was very sub par. I'd actually booked a flight back to Auckland on the Sunday night so that worked out well :)

Does Wagner come in to consideration now for the second test or are have they painted themselves in to a corner with that decision? If O'Rourke is injured who do you bring in?

From a non-playing POV, TVNZ need to sort out the streaming quality. The number of times it froze was way too much...

Commentary I was okay with, no crapping on for hours with boring annecdotes but as to Katey Martin being boring, yeah, well, she's just fitting in, isn't she? The commentary team needs someone with an accent The 12th Man (RIP actually or just professionally I have no idea) could have taken the piss out of. Should be compulsory that every commentary team has at least one member with an exploitable quirk.

Didn't need James Tito, though. Didn't add anything. But if the audience demands, I guess the audience gets...

That top order is a huge concern. It's clear that T20 and short form have destroyed test technique in this country.

Go all out this test a la B McCullum and go and have fun. Otherwise we'll get steamrolled again.

Didn’t want to elaborate on Martin but in my opinion she’s not just boring, she hasn’t got the feel for a duo on the mic.
Maybe with a third member in the box it would flow a bit better.
She definitely has the technical knowledge but I find it sometimes awkward to listen to her and the other commentator.

And we're not really in a position to tell anyone ÿou play T20 and you're not getting picked for Tests, we've got other options". Of course, you hardly hang the entirety of the Black Cap's poor form against Australia over such a long period on T20...

It's symptomatic of tests being relegated in favour of T20. As mentioned earlier, I don't recall one black cap that was got out by the aussies. Outthought maybe, but they all played rubbish shots pretty much.

Aussie certainly have the psychological edge. I heard one Aussie fan astounded that we were so timid.

Not sure about the comments from Stead regarding the non-selection of Santner.

Santner might have been useful, however that's not where they got it wrong selection wise. It could be argued that they didn't try a few overs of Phillips soon enough after his recent successes. Where they really got it wrong though was:

Telling Wagner he would not be selected for either of the tests before the series even started which has proven to be a massive distraction.
Bringing in a bowler in Kuggeleign that has only had a diet of T20 cricket in the last few months to face an Australian side that have come off 5 tests.
Giving Conway the gloves in the T20s. If he's going to be the keeper at the T20 world cup there are a number of upcoming games against minnow sides that he could use to fine tune his glovework. Why risk give our premier opening test batsman that job prior to the most important test series on our calendar?

Stead has been a major part of the downhill slide of this team.

No way conway should even be playing T20. I'm of the firm opinion that's what's upset his test game.
