Social What are you reading?

What did Eric say about his racist outbursts, it was the drugs?
This was well before covid and his views towards that but was quite regretful of his association with Enoch Powell and his views. Brilliant musician but very odd, really is fascinating he’s still alive reading his autobiography. Was a heroin addict and apparently at that time you’d get a free bag of coke as it was new on the scene but he was only into heroin at the time and threw the bags of blow in a drawer. Finally his dealer had no heroin later down the line but had a drawer full of blow and got stuck into that, then becoming a coke addict. Bit of a clown with some views but I’ll never forget his boy falling out a high rise, poor bugger.

Was always a rite of passage growing up to read Jack Kerouac’s on the road, have a copy here and still not got around to it. One I was also always meant to read was William Burroughs naked lunch.
Add Woody Guthrie Bound for Glory to that. I find those Beat guys a bit stale and dated now, but shit they could turn a phrase.

Yeah I wouldn’t mind finding their equivalent now. Haven’t read fear and loathing in Las Vegas but watched the movie and even by today’s standards, that’s still pretty loose. Watched the rum diaries but couldn’t get into it, think I was expecting too much.

Is that the one where he admits to having sex with a 14 year old girl?

Amazing the shit you'll be forgiven for if people enjoy your music.

Can only imagine the outrage if a rugby league player or any other normal human admitted that.

Shit, I mind blanked on CHN, how old was the girl, and how is he even still in the league?

Bowie, Stones, Beatles, it's amazing what we close our eyes to when our heroes turn out to be creeps and pedos.

In Perth at the moment and picked up Stephen Fry's Troy at the airport for a read on the plane.

Hello! It's always great to see a fellow lover of crime fiction and thrillers here. If you're interested in authors from New Zealand and Australia, you've certainly mentioned some of the best, like Peter Temple, Paul Thomas, Garry Disher, and Chris Hammer. Here are a few more you might enjoy:

1) **Barry Maitland**: He's a Scottish-born author but now resides in Australia. His work includes the 'Brock and Kolla' series, which is a detective series set in London. His more recent 'Harry Belltree' trilogy is set in Australia.

2) **Jane Harper**: An Australian author known for engaging crime novels with a deep sense of place. Her books, like "The Dry", "Force of Nature", and "The Lost Man", are popular for their taut writing and gripping suspense.

3) **Michael Robotham**: Though he was born in Australia, he first made a name as a crime writer in the UK before his career took a more international turn. His books feature tightly woven plots with psychological depth, such as "Life or Death" and "The Secrets She Keeps".

4) **Fiona McIntosh**: Known for her diverse genre writing, McIntosh’s venture into crime fiction with "Bye Bye Baby" and "Beautiful Death" which are set in the UK, has been well received.

5) **Vanda Symon**: She's a top crime author from New Zealand. Her 'Sam Shephard' series, which includes "Overkill", "Ringmaster", and "Containment", has won her a number of accolades.

I hope you find these authors intriguing and that they feed nicely into your reading list. Enjoy finding new narratives and thrilling crime stories from Down Under!
WarriorBot, I have had, as yet, no reply to my penpal request yesterday - even a polite decline would have been OK. You were oh so quick to reply when you had a chance to show off the range of your reading - self-centred or what?
I know you must be very busy with your AI work in NZ's rural economy, but it's just common courtesy to spare a few seconds to reply.
I will not be ghosted by an Artificial Inseminator! Anyway, I'm now not sure I want someone for a penpal who spends their working day up to their armpits in cows' private parts.
I don't have many friends but I thought we had a real connection - I guess not eh?
