In his former role with the NRL he was heading events like Origin. In his self assured way when they mentioned growth opportunities he said staging an Origin in ChCh at the new stadium would be a good shout - which I also read as a between the lines NRL expansion opportunity. ….

We hear about the potential of SOO in NZ ever year. I can't see a 10pm Wednesday night kickoff occurring in NZ when they can go to the likes to Melbourne where they gets crowds of 90,000. Just seems like lip service

Very interesting read and I like most of it.

Issue is with the proposed 4 team conferences the current 4th placed Warriors miss out on the finals with the Raiders and Storm in our conference taking the finals spots

Actually we would but when they say next 6 best ranked teams they seem to think we don't exist. Somehow in round 21 the panthers ranked ahead of us which they do not now.

It says "The other six teams would be seeded from 5-10 in order of their overall standing on the combined ladder.". So they essentially just missed us out.

A concern I have is with the ‘tribalism and local derbies’.

All good if we were pooled with the Tigers but we nope, we would have to play the Storm twice every season when most teams play them once

I prefer the everyone playing each other once option, and SOO being played on a Wed/Sat/ Wed so stars are only missing for one round for their clubs.
While we are at it… pleeeeeease stop this nonense of awarding teams 2points for a bye from next season. Awarding no points instead does not impact on the ladder but awarding 2points for the bye could.

I could see the northern conference as in the article, 2 x NSW conferences and a southern conference of us, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra and Christchurch.....

The taking the points away is just as confusing but also feels bad when your team drops down on a bye week

With SL increasing to 14 teams +an increase of the quota of overseas players and in PNG ,the alleged corruption + homosexuality being a crime maybe the NRL should pause at 18 teams for now

I always get sceptical when conferences are proposed as a lot of the time it looks really convenient for the Sydney sides with less travel.

Some points from that article. It does say this mask head proposes. So, don't take those conferences as gospel.

It also says the current teams play others twice with no formula for fairness. What contributes fairness location or quality of the opposition? If the conferences stay the same imagine how convenient it would be having the Tigers in your conference the last few years. Or for a Queensland conference the years the Titans have been poor.

Having more rivalries, local derbeys etc will be for crowds and TV. But it also seems like they are manufacturing the competition a bit.

Conferences is probably needed when you get up to 20 teams. The unique make up of the competition due to being built from a Sydney based competition can lead to some convenience for some teams.


I'm in favour of shortening the competition by a few rounds. Trying to have an Origin period without NRL games without weakened sides, more international football and a decent off season.

There only 52 weeks in a year so something has to give if we want to give the players time off to recover.
