The forum discussion revolves around the upcoming Warriors vs Panthers game, focusing on team selections, predictions, and the overall state of both teams. The inclusion of MGT in the starting lineup has sparked considerable conversation, with some questioning the decision to play him over other rookies like EIT. Concerns about complacency are also raised, with several members, including The Undertaker #103 sydneywarrior92 #109, cautioning against underestimating the Panthers, despite their weakened squad and recent scheduling challenges especially after the Origin games, as noted by watcher #82 wizard of Tauranga #83.
A significant portion of the discussion examines the Warriors' team dynamics and coaching decisions. Some posters are still not sure about Stowers Smith, sup42 #27 Neo #94 have offered more insight to his value. Many are highlighting the significance of the game for TMM's Te Maire Martin 100th NRL appearance, WahsaurusRex #59 noting the personal achievement given his earlier medical retirement, sydneywarrior92 #38 also expressed disappointment that Healey got cut from the team. The team's overall transformation since 2023 is also discussed, juju #70 pointing out the positive changes in the Warriors' business side after the arrival of coach Webster and Robbie.
The perceived strength of the Warriors and potential for a decisive victory are contrasted with reminders of past upsets. some forums members like Leighton Rhino #84 are confident about a big win, others like Tookey 2.0 #46 emphasize the team's historical struggles after a week off. There is a general consensus that the Warriors should win if they maintain their discipline and intensity, complacency could lead to a disappointing result as per the comments from sup42 #33 The Undertaker #42.
I hope we don't get in any salary cap trouble for playing this other Egan.
New signing
Having said that, Newy have looked a lot better without Ponga in a few games this year.if a Ponga-less Newcastle could beat them 13+ without their SOO stars, I'd be terribly disappointed if this ended up being another 1-12 affair. Need to take the game seriously, but if we come out with the same intent as the Cronulla game, we should be way too good.
Well said.We shouldn’t underestimate the panthers here. They have prepared for this scenario and will come in hot. Remember a Young Luai tearing us to shreds a few years ago?
Let’s not underestimate them. 5-10% off and we will struggle to beat them as they will lift.
Keep our standards, discipline and intensity and on paper, we should be too strong.
But we thought that about them at Magic Round last year, didn’t we?
Let’s not give them a sniff and knock out any complacency by the team or the fan base. We still have to earn this win.
Bring on Saturday.
I dunno. The Ponga-less Newcastle struggled big time against an origin impacted chooks the other night. In one of the only games where their pack actually won the middle, they could only muster 6 pts. Their attack issues run deeper than Ponga not being in great form.Having said that, Newy have looked a lot better without Ponga in a few games this year.
That is not an indictment on Ponga. We it could be said have looked a lot better without Wade Egan (fortunate then that Wayne is playing this week not Wade), Mitch Barnett, and JFH this season....without that telling the full story.
to play devils advocate, I'd say we've done well winning games we "should" win this year. This banana skin stuff is really losing its appeal.Uh oh, sounds like there's a few confident fans in here. We never seem to go well when we SHOULD, and after a week off we are historically quite clunky.
I hope anyone eating a banana this week is double bagging the peel and throwing it to the bottom of the rubbish bin, we don't need any hanging around come Saturday evening
I think our bench is far superiorI think indeed the Panthers pack is NRL standard. The back line though is full of first and second year players plus Daine Laurie. We should win 13 plus.
No sharpe was their big problem for that game - previous time without ponga they were actually goodI dunno. Yuck, some of teh defence in those highlights was putridWhilst I agree with previous posters that this is a game we should win well, we need to show Penrith the respect they deserve as 4 time reigning champs. Yes, this is not the side that won the last 4 years straight. But there is still enough quality in this side to cause us trouble if we make the mistake that the Sharks made a few weeks back in thinking all we need to do is turn up and we'll win against origin depleted opposition (Roosters in their case).
This game is forever etched into my memory of what can happen if we treat an origin depleted panthers lightly. Back in 2018, when we were 4th and Penrith were 5th, we were coming to Penrith expecting to win this. The result was an absolute spanking given to us by the baby panthers. Many of these penrith cubs are terrorizing the NRL today:

Match Highlights: Panthers v Warriors - Round 17, 2018
A masterclass from rookie halfback Jarome Luai has propelled an undermanned Penrith Panthers outfit to a 36-4 win over the New Zealand Warriorswww.nrl.com
maybe but that was only one game where you had Sharpe but no Ponga. It's only a sample size of one game and it was against an origin depleted penrith that was even weaker than the one that will play us on Saturday. Hard to make inference based on that. But I digress because this thread is not about Newcastle haha.No sharpe was their big problem for that game - previous time without ponga they were actually good
If we are a proper top 4 side (which we are) then Penrith have no business getting anywhere near us.
