General Is the Metcalf experience to halves over?

If Luke Metcalf went to Melbourne do you think Bellamy could turn him into a genuine 7?
It’s not just Bellamy it’s the quality of players around him.
Chuck Metcalf next to Munster and have him throwing short balls to Katoa and chipping for Papenhayzen he would go ok.
Your short comings would be absorbed a lot more than what Metcalf has at his disposal here.

Is that not exactly what happened to hughes? Fallback for both titans and cowboys Q cup. They picked him up and turned him into a halfback. I think the storm have now understood that the era of non-running halfbacks are over and would probably love metcalf in turn.
Obivously that works a lot better with a spine built around a running half. With a defensive five eight with a great short kicking game and a very elusive fallback.

Well yes it is, so what I'm saying is the kid needs time since he's the chosen one. This club has never shown patience, it would be nice to see them follow through with the plan for this season at least.

Turn Tuapki into a 6 or 7

There are glimpses of what’s there. It didn’t quite look natural, but he was trying to get as deep into the line as he could in the back end of the second half but that will come. He’s going to need to be willing to take a hit and that must be tricky with his injury history. The try saver was a good indication of a never give up attitude and hopefully gave him some confidence in his speed. Also his late try to beat Munster hopefully gave him confidence that he has the speed to beat people. I think he’ll get there myself

Guess the Metcalf experience is lasting one more week at least then?

Just checked and he's played in the halves 27 times in his career, and has won 19 of them, which is a touch over 70%

What ever he's doing, it seems to be translating to success on the field.

Deffo needs to improve in a few areas, but most 27 game halves do....
I think most people are giving him time and trusting Websters judgement.

Doesn’t mean we think his performances inspire much confidence yet…

In Webster we trust.

I’m soaking up the win
Looking at how he back upped Cappers for that try
And stepping up to take the winning goal
Keep attacking Luke get more confidence
While you out there next to CHT
Tell him to have a go sometimes too
Good on ya mate
Throw a nothing prawn on the barbie😎

He missed a bunch of kicks but nailed the one that won the game.

He didn't drop his balls and ask someone else to take it. He took the big moment. That is a mind set he had to use to back himself in spite of his misses.

That is a good improvement. There are a whole bunch of upsides to Metcalf and they are starting to show.

Of course he's a long way off. But that's what time is for. He's going alright

Yeah that’s how I see it.
I have my concerns though.
But as long as we are winning I’m happy.
One surprise is how good CHT is going.
We just let these 2 grow and work on their combo and see when/if we start losing.

Guarentee there wouldve been activity if he missed that kick ;)

Ive always said he's best suited to fullback since i first saw him play with SJ at the Sharks.......still hasnt changed for me tbh, the tries he's scored this year are fullback/support like

However if we're trying to develop him as a 7 then he gets the season as far as im concerned. And tbf his kicking game (altho not in the Fogerty, Reynolds class) has been better than expected......nice 40/20 he rattled off there. As u say he does have obvious work ons

Lack of creativity and organisation at times in the opposition 20 not just for him but our attack as a whole a big one. Tbf Leka apart we lack punch on the edges to shorten defensive lines which doesnt help. He could do his outsides a big favour tho straightening up and digging a bit deeper in the line. Changing tempo now and then would also help find space. Id also like to see some better ends to our sets. We seem to be getting tackled on the last a lot this season, maybe thats a coached tactic in backing our defence, but it does seem a momentum killer just meekly handing the ball over.

Without a doubt a work in progress.

Round 1, 2027. (I realise players will move and will retire, that’s kinda the point. And also some get even older later in the season)

Assuming both play at least 30 games (of a possible 41-42) each in the remaining 2 seasons. (Age, games)

Hughes-Munster (both 32 and 185-248 games)
Cleary-Talagi (29-22 and 208-52 games)
Mose-Brown (32-26 and 255-159 games)
Luai-Galvin (30-21 and 166-57 games)
Reynolds-Mam (36-24 and 324-87 games)
Walker-Smith (both 24 and 107-66 games )
DCE-Brooks (38-32 and 366-268 games)
Fogarty-Strange (33-22 and 131-59 games)
Foran-Campbell (36-27 and 333-93 games)
Katoa-Nikorima (23-32 and 81-238 games)
Hynes-Trindall (30-27 and 136-107 games)
Humphreys-Walker (25-37 and 36-248 games)
Sexton-Burton (both 26 and 83-135 games)
Ilias-Flanagan (26-28 and 89-135 games)
Gamble-Sharpe (30-22 and 94-48 games)
Clifford-Dearden (29-26 and 109-140 games)

Then finally.
Metcalf-CHT (28-27 and 62-107 games)

First off, if not Metcalf and CHT. Then who?Boyd? Lol. He’s here cause he’s an “ok” player. Not cause he’s a gun.

We need to stick with CHT and Metcalf. Outside of injury.

Regardless of if we’re winning or losing. We just “happen” to be winning atm.
We’re not going to win anything this year.

We’re BUILDING…….
So let’s build………

So if we deteriorate in the halves and start losing we continue with the combo?
I get what you’re saying with the lack of halves coming up the next few years but I don’t believe we should continue with something that’s not working.
I hope we do continue to grow but I won’t give these 2 the keys for the rest of the year if it’s not working, there would be a time to change it up.
Hopefully that doesn’t happen.

We’re winning so he can stay

2/8 kicking is horrendous
The game shouldn’t have been that close nor should it have gone into overtime

His short ball to Leka which just wasn’t on because he literally drifted into him as Leka was running a straight line then passed it too late / on the line causing him to drop the ball. These are all learnings for the young jedi.. I still think if/when his stock rises he’ll be pulling the homesick card. Whether we like it or not, they all do, especially if it’s Manly, Roosters or one of the top clubs who come knocking with a good offer
