Cooking up a strawman, looking at the off contract outside backs who is likely not to start for his team in rd 1.

Try Grant Anderson or Harley Smith-Shields, I know nothing about those blokes ability compared to a Harper but you’d probably have to give them the Egan or Metcalf treatment, i.e. multi year on decent money, sort them out a place, job for the girlfriend, sell them on the chance of a starting spot next year if Roger goes, and then hope their manager has enough pull to talk maniacs like Bellamy or Stuart into releasing them early. That’s real long shot stuff. To get a marginal upgrade and block up the youths longer than just this year.

Didn’t MH say he was in Walkers spare room and he picked him up from the airport – that’s the opposite of rolling out the red carpet. That’s ‘trainings on Monday, see you there if your keen’ type stuff. The club is probably right to save the big pitches for positions they really need, we aren’t a contender this year, we don’t need to sack cappy over it.

If anyone wanted MGT wouldn’t he have gone already? Like Roche did?

I think there are many that are missing the point here. We have clearly said we are a development club now, which means we must be patient and continue to invest in our youngsters.

By securing the likes of a Harper over a Mulitalo is arguable better for youngsters development S it doesn’t block their pathway for multiple years. Harper (although personally I wii would’ve like MGT given another crack) is purely a stop gap measure. Also by not splashing out salary cap on a big signing, we may be able to spend on some of the gun juniors coming through ala our development model.

Patience is key here. To call for Cappy or other heads to roll because of frustration of not getting more big name signings is well off the mark.

Crazy how stacked a lot of squads are this year, and are still able to re sign players (e.g. Hazelton and Mulitalo). Yet we are releasing players and making signings like Harper. After losing AFB/Tohu/SJ. No one wants to come to NZ I guess, we should ask for some kind of cap bonus like PNG would get.

I just don't think any of this is true...

    AFB was replaced by JFH

SJ we have replaced internally and signed competent depth in Boyd

    Tohu retired 3 minutes ago...

It's going to be a long season in here by the looks of it. Too many posters expecting a win now situation. It's not the reality and issues like our outside back depth are not easily solved. Take a look at our current list of outside backs to play first grade - Harper is a 7th option! (maybe 6th due to Kosi doing Kosi things).

    1. DWZ (injured)
    2. RTS
    3. Berry (injured)
    4. Ali
    5. Pompey
    6. Kosi
    7. Harper
    8. MGT

And this list doesn't include the fact TT is playing wing this week and whispers that a genuine option of TMM to 1, CNK to centre is also a consideration.

Calm the farm is my advice

I do agree with other posts though that we surely have missed some targets.

Ran into Webby and the rest of the coaching staff at the ‘New York New York’ resort a few hours ago

My little brother went up and gave them an ‘up the Wahs’ so Webby followed him over and he said hello to our table, shook everyone’s hand and was v nice with his time

They then found themselves a bench and wouldn’t ya know it, the whole ref squad for the weekend with Ash Klein and then stopped by and chatted with them for a while 👀

Will be missing the fan fest to do a day trip to LA before the games, but that more than made up for it

Just wanted to share (/flex a little hahaha)
Awesome! I stayed at New York New York years ago when I visited Vegas, was a good time.

I have to say Webby is a great guy. I had a similar occurance in October. He was on our flight to Fiji and i bumped into him in the Koru lounge while looking after the kids and he gave me all the time in the world. Also chatted to me on the other site in Nadi and was just the most welcome guy. I really wish him all the success he can get.

Anyway, enjoy Vegas WahsaurusRex. Will be epic!

Harper is only signed until November on what you would assume is minimum wage. So that is approximately $100k between now and then. Therefore if a more attractive option comes up before June 30 you still have the ability to sign them and pay Morgan out to free up the spot without taking any meaningful impact to your salary cap

Realistically, I don't think there's many NRL ready outside backs who would be willing to sign with a team, relocate to NZ on minimum wage with the understanding that you are back up to the back up players. That essentially means you have almost no chance of showing your skills in the hopes of getting a better/bigger contract next year.

It's a stop gap measure because we have 2 of our top back 5 out for an extended run this year, with RTS's hammy's always a bit of concern and Pompey also getting injured often.

We already have Taine and Ali in the backline, who have a combined total of 18 NRL games. Another injury and having to play Kali, MGT or another green rookie for more than 1 or 2 games in a row could be catestrophic to our season.

Morgan Harper to be the buy of the year. You heard it here first 😅
