There has been a point of difference over the last couple of seasons to those previous and that is our second halves. For years we would fade in the final 25-30 minutes and opposition sides would know they just needed to hang in long enough to run over the top of us. This has changed significantly and it's been a real positive under Webby. The season has pretty rough at times from the whopping injury toll to the usual game changing bunker calls that this side gets, but at least we are still have a go each game, the Titans and Dragons games the only ones where we weren't there mentally for the entire 80. If we continue to have a decent crack at these final 7 regular season games, then this season will be a good one for Webby to build on. He's faced an unprecedented level of adversity and I'm confident he'll take a lot into 2025. Those recent comments from SJ were heartening that he's the right man for arguably the toughest coaching gig in the comp.

Whether it not you think Webby is the right man for the job or not, it's irrelevant.

The story goes he's the most successful coach in his first year at the Warriors.

Second year he's been below average.

Now what's gotten us into a mess since 2011 is the merry go round of coaches. 8 coaches between Cleary and Webster in 11 years.

None of them have been remotely successful, all below 45% win rate.

Webby is second in win % after Daniel Anderson. Cleary is a tick under 50%.

By stats alone you have to keep backing him.
By the sellouts this year, you have to back him and management.
By the injuries we've had pre, during and post game, you have to back him.

I don't think ANY coach can implement their system successfully in 2 years with an inherited squad that's been losing for years, only making top 8 once in 11 years. Cleary took two goes before he built the dynasty.

Everyone calling for Webbys head needs to have a wank and release some pent up energy.

If Sj is fit he has to come back.
Firstly for his kicking- both in general play and goal kicking.
Secondly- both himself and the club need to make a decision if he’s the best option for next year or if it is indeed time to move on.
Thirdly- if there’s anyone in this squad who pull off a miracle and sneak as into the finals it’s him.

    Hi

Being a Warriors fan is a mind of a mind freak (insert stronger four letter F-word here)

Nearly every game the Warriors take the lead and look like winning only to be pipped at the post. It is a roller coaster of dashed emotions.
Yesterday we were tied 14-14 with ten minutes left with all the momentum and conspired to lose.
This isn't a thread about what happened yesterday because losing at the last minute or late in the game happens all the time to the Warriors.
The Warriors leading at half time is no guarantee of victory or in fact any indicator the Warriors are going to win.

Here are my tips for how to maintain your temperament while watching and recovering from a Warriors game. Please join in with your tips so we can all learn from each other.

    1) Look away and don't watch the replays when they send it up to the bunker. The Bunker sure as hell isn't paying any attention to the replays and footage based on the bizarre takes they have so why should you bother watching and forming an opinion. If you do form an opinion, no matter how captain obvious the footage is there is no guarantee the bunker will agree with you or the commentators so my first tip is don't let yourself have an opinion. Don't look at the screen until they announce the result. Sounds like I am taking the piss but that is what I do and I never get wound up.

    2) Realise that the NRL has dynamics that allow the losing team to catch up. If we are winning at half time not only don't count your chickens but don't even go into the chicken hutch or even think about chickens.

    3) Watch the game without hoping the Warriors will win as much as you can and just watch to enjoy the game of rugby league and to enjoy having a NZ side in the NRL.

What about you what are your techniques....Again not a thread to blame the refs or come up with serious strategies for how the Warriors can win more as this Warriors journey I have learned has been ongoing since 1995. But somewhat more acute this year.

What are your tips for not letting losses get to you both through the game as it happening and after the game. What advice do you have for everyone so we can all learn to be resilient.

    Cheers

    Wrighty
Enjoy the journey not the destination.

Embrace the lows as well as the highs. It’s all like a soap opera for guys!

You wouldve thought the disfunction pre Webby of having 6 coaches (7 if you count Stacey) in about 10 seasons shouldve been enough for fans to realize the folly of the revolving coaching door policy?......guess not

Injuries apart the main failing i think he's had this season is not adapting his style from last year (which is common for new coaches especially when it was so successful)

The game plan was simple.....play for field position, hold the ball, kick deep, force the error......and then our red zone attack was all structure based.......sweeping plays, with multiple lead and decoy runners, all based off SJ choosing the right option of putting whichever player into space.

The problem with structure based attack is it can be worked out. U can recognize the patterns and adjust your defensive lines to cover. And thats what it looked like teams had done......they had worked out our attack, werent condensing or committing in the middle (not helped early on with a couple of vanilla non threatning edge backrowers Capewell and Ford imo) defence could just drift off and cover numbers.....and we had no plan B to go to.

I think to his credit he recognized this and has tried to introduce a more direct, play whats in front of you style (which changing attack strategy mid season is really hard to do) and while initially looking good (under Te Maire) we now seem to have this mish mash atm and a lot of disconnect.

Plus the field postion game doesnt work if your turning the ball over as much as we have this year and ceding the piggyback penalties.

Webby ticks a lot of boxes for me and wouldve learnt more from this season than last. It would just be continued madness if u didnt give him the chance to put those learnings into practice........nah he's the guy......(altho Webby i gotta say your bench use frustrates the feck out of me)

I am sorry this needs to be said. Tuapiki's first drop under the high ball set the tone for the night.
RTS should be our full back before Taine. Catching high balls at full back is your job. Notwithstanding that RTS and Ali both left a short kick for each other to clean up resulting in a try.

Hey Wrighty I know you're new to league so I'll explain why I think this shouldn't be the case, from my point of view.

This is a knee jerk reaction, and won't serve us well in the long run if all we are doing is responding to each and everything thing that happens.

    • Ford was poor tonight? Drop him
    • Niukore let 2 tries in early? Drop him
    • Tuaupiki dropped the first ball of the night? Never to play FB again.
    • TMM and CHT had a 2 good games together? Drop SJ as he's shit.
    • Roger was quiet at centre? drop him.
These are things that at times this year many fans have been calling for, and I get it because it's usually after we've been poor, but if we were going to change everything we do (whether it's positive - keep a player in fg, or negative - drop or move a player) in a reactive way we're never going to build the consistency that we all want.
We need to understand WHY these things are happening.

Why was CHT doing all of the kicking?
Why did Niukore over commit in the 2 tackles leading up to their first 2 tries?
Why did both Roger and Ali hang back with that try in the end?

Some of these questions we won't know the answers to as fans, but some of them are more obvious. Injury is a clear one, but I think injuries generally mean that players are playing in situations and combinations that they probably haven't had many reps in. Resulting in the wrong options being taken under pressure.

Based on last nights brain explosions, if we were being reactive we'd have to drop Barney for 2 pretty epic clangers. And we all know we're not dropping him

Probably a fair statement, when you see try's from AFB, Barney, Capewell, RTS....

If we didn't already know the result, you'd swear we destroyed them.

    We monstered them.

We have been monstering teams all year for absolutely nothing - it's infuriating.

From the very first game of the season - nothing to show for it. (Look at these stats v Sharks!!)

20 unanswered points against Melbourne in Melbourne - nothing to show for it.

It is without doubt the strangest season I've ever seen from us.

Absolute munters calling for Webby to go after that... need some better fans with shit takes like that. You're entitled to your opinion, sure, but at least base it on something - Webby didn't miss tackles, Webby didn't give away dumb penalties, Webby didn't injure our two first-choice goal kickers... Offer constructive chat - don't just throw stones.

New coach learning some harsh truths.
He will be better for the pressure of the management of injuries and the bs of the NRL when it comes to NZ.
And how to use a bench.
I'm excited by the rest of season and bringing some of new lads on.
We lost the season weeks ago.
it's only a game lads, don't link your mental health to what happens in this corrupt competition.

In important news I am one wine in.
I am in joggers and a T shirt and not dressed appropriately to drive to the dairy for a trumpet.
I do have some plain yoghurt in the fridge and there is some shortbread biscuits that need to be eaten by someone.

In terms of the game. It will be epic. Ebbs and flows. Drama. Heroism. And cometh the hour cometh the man who will be that man in the championship minutes
    These teams are evenly matched,
Can the warriors bounce back mentally will be the sub plot of the match.

Just a quick note for people who think players are either 'injured' or 'not injured' - that couldn't be further from reality. If every player currently carrying an injury was rested until 100% fit, the NRL would have about 10% of its player pool taking the field each week.

Majority of players will play with an injury and through pain for large parts of the season. Injuries are managed as best as possible, some have very clearly defined recovery paths, others are literally a day-to-day proposition. Coaches don't go out of their way to "play injured players" - they get a massive amount of info from physios, doctors, rehab staff and the player themselves - and make calls based on that. Sometimes it works fine, and players play well for large parts despite managing an injury - yet we are all none the wiser. When things turn to shit, form drops, other players get injured and the pressure increases, we all look for someone to point the finger at. The coach might be using the same exact injury management strategy he did the year prior, but because of a myriad of other factors, it isn't working.

In some extreme circumstances players play completely busted and it comes off and becomes a thing of legend - see Trent Robinson and Cooper Cronk in the 2018 GF. My point is, majority of injuries are several shades of grey and we never actually hear about most.

Could even be top 3 as I think he’s overtaken AFB this year.
How did AFB fall in everyones opinion. Is it because he signed elsewhere....

As compared to last year he is averaging better metres per game , averaging better post contact metres per game, averaging more tackle breaks per game, better tackle efficiency. Only real noteworthy thing he has dropped in is offloads. All this whilst performing in a pretty depressive team compared to what they delivered last year.

And you do not want to compare his stats with JFH. I get it, people want to think they are getting an upgrade. Hopefully that is true, but AFB always has been huge for us. Him deciding to leave should not weaken his standing amongst fans of this club.

He also confirms the Roosters offered him a deal, but doubles down for the millionth time that it is the Warriors or retirement.
Must admit, this kinda blows me away. A 2 year deal to finish his career at the roosters would've given him a red-hot shot at the premiership he so craves plus it was big money and uncle nick would've set him up for the rest of his life after footy.
He must REALLY love this club.

Man I feel that some are being a bit harsh on Webby.

Last year, everything went right for him. As a coach I think he had a lot to do with that, but also I think we had like 11 or 12 players have career best years, which would have helped immensely.

This year we've not had much luck with injuries and form (and a few did calls along the way), but also I really do think that every team has aimed up against us. We've had no easy games which has resulted in our players being quite knackered.

Webby's not without fault - he's struggled with his bench immensely imo, and hasn't been able to get the balance right this year. He's also moved players around more than he did last year, and struggled to bring in youth when needed. Very few rookie coaches are able to replicate back to back to back years of strong performances. I'm happy that even tho things have been so disappointing for us this year we're still a good chance to make the finals - he's instilled a lot positives in to this club and at the end of the day, we'd probably all be singing his praises right now if a couple of those one percenters went out way (Coates try in the corner, Bulldogs missed TMM call, first Titans game this year).

I think he'll lead us to the promised land. It's just not very likely it's gunna be this year
