Huge signings, but am I right in thinking we're still missing some key pieces - we didn't re-sign either of our hookers from last year, and haven't signed any replacement as of yet.

We still have Capri Paekau, who started 7 times last season. We let go Turua-Quidley and Carmont who were also used at hooker.
So yeah, defitiniely thinking someone else will be signed.
Cam George said on radio last week there were one or two more signings to come (Waaka being the one)

Alternatively, I could someone like Paki being useful at hooker, since she unlikely to crack the backline now

Trio confirmed on NRLW development contracts for 2026

With the 2026 NRLW preseason campaign fast approaching the One New Zealand Warriors have confirmed development contracts for three young players.

One of the trio is 17-year-old Asha Taumoepeau-Williams, regarded by many judges as the most exciting prospect in New Zealand rugby league and rugby union.

The other two are Gezreyal Zyon Maiu’u, sister of former Warriors NRL forward Zyon Maiu’u, and Patricia Heihei, both 18 and also boasting rugby league and rugby union backgrounds.

Howick College student Taumoepeau-Williams – who doesn’t turn 18 until September – has been signed on a development deal this year before being upgraded to a top 24 NRLW contract next season.

The outside back’s career has been nothing short of remarkable so far.

She was exceptional for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the New South Wales Rugby League’s Lisa Fiola Cup (under-17) competition in both 2024 and 2025.

She scored 17 tries in 10 games for the all-conquering Bulldogs in 2024 including four tries in their 36-0 grand final win over the Wests Tigers; she added 11 tries in eight outings last year.

Taumoepeau-Williams made six appearances for the Auckland Storm in rugby union’s Farah Palmer Cup provincial competition last year and also excelled at the 2025 Global Youth Sevens when she was named MVP.

“Asha is a prodigious talent, equally adept at centre or fullback,” said One New Zealand Warriors NRLW head coach Ron Griffiths.

“With the continued right attitude, she has the potential to have an enormous future in the NRLW. Asha’s signature was a great coup for the One New Zealand Warriors.”

Zyon Maiu’u has also been signed as a development player this season then moving up to the full NRLW squad in 2027.

The Mount Albert Grammar School product is not only a dual rugby league-rugby union player but also an accomplished track and field athlete in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 300m hurdles as well as the triple jump.

An edge player for Mount Albert Grammar in both rugby codes, she was used as a second rower for the St George Dragons in the NSWRL’s Tarsha Gale Cup (under-19) competition last year when she won the players’ player of the year award.

“A local junior returning home after a stint with St George, Gez is a powerful back rower who runs great lines and is also a great defender,” said Griffiths.

“We are excited to have her onboard at the Warriors.”

Signed as a development player for 2026 and 2027, Heihei attended Manukura School in Palmerston North representing the school in rugby union as well as the Manawatu Cyclones in the Farah Palmer Cup.

She was used at loose forward and standoff for the Penrith Panthers in the NSWRL’s Lisa Fiola Cup last year, finishing the season with 10 tries.

“A tough as teak ball-playing lock with an impressive kicking game. Patricia has impeccable timing in defence,” said Griffiths.

“We are thrilled to have her joining us for the next two years at least.”

Of the Warriors’ four development players last year, teenaged forwards Ivana Lauitiiti and Ashlee Matapo quickly became fully-fledged NRLW players.

Matapo made her debut in the round one match against the Roosters with Lauitiiti following in round five against the Cowboys. They also both made their Test debuts in the Pacific Championships, Lauitiiti with the Kiwi Ferns and Matapo with the Cook Islands Moana.

Rugby union international Huriwai signs NRLW deal

New Zealand-born Australian rugby union international Jasmin Huriwai has been signed by the One New Zealand Warriors for the 2026 NRLW season.

The 32-year-old Auckland-born halfback, who moved to Australia at a young age, has been in the Brumbies’ Super Rugby side for the past three seasons and has played six Tests for the Wallaroos since her debut in 2023.

One New Zealand Warriors NRLW head coach Ron Griffiths was impressed by lengths Huriwai went to in her quest for a contract.

“Jay made a significant personal sacrifice by moving herself from Australia of her own volition,” he said.

“In our initial discussion there were no guarantees that she would secure an NRLW contract only an opportunity to play in the Kath Wharton and possibly secure a contract.

We are elated she has earned her opportunity, and the sacrifice she has made speaks volumes for her character

“Jay’s resolve to succeed has paid her back. We are elated she has earned her opportunity, and the sacrifice she has made speaks volumes for her character.”

Huriwai said she was overwhelmed when she learned she had a deal.

“Very emotional. When Ron told me he said it in a very subtle way and it took me a bit to process it,” she said.

“My partner was with me and she was nudging me like she knew what he said and then I just started bawling my eyes out, and, yeah, pretty much cried that whole day.”

Huriwai’s manager and former Warrior Tyran Smith had put her in contact with Griffiths.

“He sent my details to Ron and then Ron gave me a call, we spoke briefly but he pretty much said he liked my style of footy and then asked if I wanted to come to New Zealand and play in the Kath Wharton tournament,” said Huriwai.

“He didn’t make it easy for me, Ron, but he did say that he wanted to see what and who I am about. I appreciate him for that, though. It made me even hungrier to want to make it.”

Making the decision to switch from rugby union to rugby league was straightforward.

“It wasn’t a tough call honestly. The only tough part about it was packing up my whole life in Australia to take a chance in New Zealand as this wasn’t a guaranteed signing,” said Huriwai.

“I thank my partner for trusting in the process as she was the one who pushed me to take this opportunity with both hands and run with it. Enjoy every moment and have fun she said.”

After some initial fears, Huriwai said she is revelling in being in New Zealand.

“I’ve lived in Australia for a long time and, at first, I was nervous and scared because I’ve never been in New Zealand for longer than two weeks since moving to Australia.

“But now, since being here, I’ve loved every single moment. Being back has felt like a long holiday and I’m just enjoying every bit. Loving the food, seeing my family and fishing would be my favourite thing here. I would do it every day if I could. But honestly, I can't wait to play, I’m so keen!

“Just want to thank Ron and his amazing wife for giving me this opportunity and taking a chance on me. I can’t wait to get out there and do my thing.

“Also, to my beautiful partner Harmony, thank you for being there for me even when I doubt myself. You always pull through and make everything better.”

The One New Zealand Warriors start preseason training next month before kicking off their season against the Bulldogs in Hamilton on July 5.
