In recent news, the New Zealand Warriors' coach, Andrew Webster, has put to rest rumours surrounding Tanah Boyd's potential departure from the team. Despite the young half's link with a move away from Mt Smart, Webster remains positive about Boyd's future with the Warriors.

This season, Boyd, after his transfer from Gold Coast Titans, has not yet had the opportunity to make an appearance for the Warriors. The young player, capable of covering halfback and five-eighth, has had to exercise patience this year, with the Warriors’ first-grade spots currently occupied by Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tavita.

Interestingly, the Metcalf-Harris-Tavita combination has led the Warriors to a commendable third position on the NRL ladder after the first nine rounds of 2025. This successful pairing has also left Te Maire Martin, despite his notable achievements last season, waiting in line for his chance.

However, Boyd's versatility has not gone unnoticed. Australian media outlet, the Daily Telegraph, recently linked the half with a potential move to the North QLD Morons Cowboys, as a replacement for Sydney Roosters-bound Reece Robson from next year.

Boyd, who is currently on a two-year contract with the Warriors, would be able to negotiate a deal with another club from November 1. This move, however, would require an early release if the young half was to relocate.

When asked about the possibility of Boyd leaving the club early, Webster was quick to dismiss such notions, stating: "That's the first time I've heard that. I'm playing every ball on its merits. I've got no intention of letting him go. We absolutely love him here. He’s learning a great job."

Boyd's current situation bears a resemblance to Brisbane Broncos hooker Billy Walters, and English pair Brad O’Neill from Wigan and Danny Walker from Warrington, who are also on the Cowboys’ shortlist.

In his career so far, Boyd has made 69 NRL appearances, all for the Titans before he joined the Warriors. Despite his absence from the first-grade team this season, Boyd's contribution to the Warriors’ New South Wales Cup side has been significant, helping them top the table in reserve grade. Boyd has created 10 tries in seven games, averages 77 running metres per game, kicked 39 goals, and made 119 tackles.

In the past, the Warriors have shown flexibility when it comes to releasing players early. Earlier this year, 21-year-old forward Zyon Maiu’u was allowed to depart the Warriors to sign a two-year deal with the Bulldogs, in order to provide him with the chance to play first-grade football. Shortly after, Dylan Walker was granted a release from the final year of his contract to join the Parramatta Eels, mainly due to personal reasons.

For Boyd, the opportunity to play regularly in NRL and the prospect of returning to Australia could influence his decision to request an early release. However, as it stands, the Warriors' coach has no intention of letting the promising player leave prematurely.
