Today's blog is a bit light hearted.

If I were head coach of an NRL franchise I would ask all my forwards to run hard and straight at the line with no late footwork before contact.
Late footwork just before the line is wimpy and takes away from the collision. I would want all my forwards on kick returns to come steaming in off the back fence and in regular sets of six to hit it up like they mean it. Full steam ahead, take no prisoners, ask for no mercy, and hit the line at pace. Late footwork decelerates the runner's go forward and decreases the chance they can bowl over the tackler. I accept that sometimes late footwork can make it harder for the tackler to line up a big shot and sometimes allow for a line break. But I as a coach am not there for line breaks. I want it to be a war of attrition. I would pack my bench with one hooker or back reserve then three muscly big forwards who like running into concrete walls for fun.

In the Warriors AFB liked a bit of late footwork and I think he would have been better just running straight like Payne Haas does.

If any of my players did put on a bit of footwork close to the line during a hit up they would be spoken to and made an example out of after the game in public. If the problem persisted they would be sent to NSW cup until they hardened up.

Thoughts and comments?

I feel this strategy would be a one percenter that would make the Warrior a feared team to play against and earn Blocker's respect for having a big Warriors pack that he likes to talk about.

What about poor old Martin Lange- opposition players were lining him up 2 or 3 tackles before he even got the ball 💥🤕😂
That’s the problem with the ol run it straight- if you’re too predictable defenses will eat it up.
Off the back fence is always entertaining but I enjoy watching the footwork of the modern day players too.

Well it needs good halves and a good hooker and a good 13. But with a good spine and good distributors who have sleight of hand my team or hypothetical team should be able to keep fresh and be highly effective with run it up the guts.

What about this for a hypothetical then…

Hunt
Vatuvei
Hurrell
Meninga
Sivo
Filipaina
Tommy Raudonikis

Hitro
Brandon smith
Iafeta
Sironen
Tallis
Burgess

Wiki
Moimoi
Tonnie Carroll
Harrigan.

My response is where do I buy season tickets to this team? FuiFui Moimoi was slightly insane.

The game is forcing players lighter (for attack) but muscle bound (for defence). Basically the attack can’t dominate the defence like it used to.

All the bigger physically dominant players are dinosaurs now (NAS!).

I don’t think running straight and smashing the opposition out of the game works like it used to.

How to take a Wrighty step around the opposition:

So right Wiz. You probably don't remember much about the game when it was in the unlimited tackle era. How the game has changed and for the better imo.

I thought our ruck speed gained momentum when he came on and often took 3 to put him down even with Haas involved. He’s been out of the game with suspension for 5 weeks or so not a bad hit out. Tonga a much more imposing pack and I think his intensity will be handy against them. The collisions in Kiwis vs Samoa were big but Tonga will be something else

We might see Wrightys strategy playing out with the Tongan steamrollers.

Will agility beat size?
