General The Centres

I think things have almost gotten to the stage where we go back to our Ivan roots and insert either Brown or Mannering (would be terrible for my NNRL side though) out in the centres.

I know it's not ideal but it cant be any worse than what we're serving up now. We need to shore up at least one side, the other side can be where the specialists show their wares. Would also allow us play another one of our surplus backrowers (eg Luck/Taylor) when they're all fit.

I'm not going to hate on Henry, (apart from that shocking pass today) I don't think he's been bad as such. However, he's simply not a starting NRL centre. He isn't costing us games, but centre is an important position, and he isn't providing anything.

I thought Ropati had a decent game today, but like I said in another thread, I was watching on a crappy stream, so I probably missed a lot.

The whole thing is a mess. The club needs to be seriously looking at a solid centre with NRL experience for next season. We don't have to be trying to sign Jennings or Lawrence, even someone like a John Carlaw at this point would be a god send. Turtle didn't have huge penetration when he was with us but our backline looked 10x better off defensively. You can see the backrowers getting frustrated too.

So I'm here after TD professed his man love for me.

I think they should just play Hurrell and have Inu on the wing with him. This way he has experience near him. Tupou is not experienced. Ropati needs to actually play 3-4 games in the Vulcans to get his spark back. Until then someone like Brown will have to fill in.

I'm still shocked we didn't buy a centre last season when we knew so many of them were going.

Yeah, but he was great for half a season before injury. I never expected him to play well until at least halfway through the season.

He needed to play Vulcans but even he himself is too proud to admit it. I think it was on the League Fix when he said he shouldn't play in the Vulcans

Not defending Bluey here, but WE only have one genuine centre and he is currently terrible. Hurrell is too young and Inu is not a specialist centre.

I am disappointed that we have not tried to recruit one in the off season or for next year.

Welcome Swanley!
I agree with what you're saying to a certain extent, however I'm not sure if I buy into the 'Hurrell is too young' theory. Israel Folau was playing for Australia at 18 and had terrible defence in his rookie year. I think that if they were to persist with Hurrell for 80 minutes every week he'd soon adapt to the rigours of 1st grade.

And btw Swanley. I think it's safe to say you've assumed the role of 'President of the Doom Squad'.
There are a few candidates for vice president around atm though. Myself included.

Though I like to think the forecast doom that's going around at present is based on fact....'04, '09....2012?

How come Hurrell cannot play for 80 minutes? I find this really terrible in today's fitness regimes..he needs to get fit fast.

Northern Union.
Ohhhhh.

There's definitely a difference between fitness and match fitness. The speed of the U20's would have been a step up from First XV union, and the NRL would have been nothing like he's ever experienced. I don't blame him for taking a while to get used to it. Having said that, you have to ask how so many other players have come through the exact same way and have not struggled as much. And was there ever a clear reason for Hurrell's absence? I know he was concussed, but he then re-appeared in the Vulcans...

I'm not even sure that it comes down to fitness. He played 80 minutes every week in the 20's unless he got injured.

Bluey mentioned after the Parra game that Hurrell wasn't managing/preserving his energy the way that experienced players do. He more or less said he was going out all guns blazing and burning through all his energy too quickly.

I remember reading a similar story about Matulino when he started. Price had to teach him how to play in bursts to preserve his energy, something to do with using whole sets to recuperate while still staying involved. Matulino said after 20 minutes he was stuffed but after the techniques Price showed him he could stay as fresh in the 60th minute as he was in the 20th. Not fitness, energy management.

Hahaha, nah it's cool, I'll get over it.

Back to the topic, I actually think Benry has been the best centre this year out of our selections, which is sad. He's made some good cover tackles in the last few weeks so I've gotta give him credit. Doesn't look like he's ever going to make a line-break or anything outrageous but I'd be happy with him on the bench going forward where 5 weeks ago I didn't want him anywhere near the side.
