Sports Run It Straight

Headgear doesn't stop CTE though.

@WahsaurusRex
Comparing the event to UFC or boxing are way different. Some of it you've already mentioned. People on the street doing dumb stuff is just that but you're not finding two teenage mates going full tilt boxing each other unlike this event.

Boxing and UFC have been around long enough that people understand these are professionals. Runit is a bunch of Muppets running at each other, promoted by other Muppets who care only about their own wallet.

If original UFC was as popular as it is today, you would also see lots of kids dying, but they now have lots of rules and regulations.

I haven't looked yup research but I am sure there is correlation between very popular events/shows and children copying them i.e. wwe wrestling, power rangers, manu world champs. How many schools banned power rangers "play"?
Well said

Dont disagree with anything you said @tyrael, I reckon there is a larger discussion to be had around young people and social media, which I feel is the bigger problem at play here..

But I just feel like the events are a whole other thing, it's competition between consenting adults (albeit not the sharpest tools in the shed imo), so if there is a market for it, then it is play on for me.

There is more that they could be doing, though.. Starting any highlight clips they put out with a "Do not try this at home" message a la WWE events or the "What are you really gambling with" messages should be the bare minimum.

Perhaps they could line the runway with gym matting to try to prevent a second collision, and put a bunch of clearly marked doctors front and centre, so anytime there is a video of a hit, you also see doctors right there? Might help scare off some of the would-be backyard "running it straight" eggs.

I'm fully aware this is an unpopular opinion though and will cop the flak for the take lol

Despite the tragedy.

If you can’t “run it straight” in this country.
What can you do?

People die have died playing rugby/league. Do you ban that?
Hell, rugby/league is the inspiration for this sport. What about boxing, mma?
Hiking/Mountain Climbing?
Motorsports?

I played rugby well into my 30s. I didn’t take my son down to play. He plays soccer and basketball. It’s safer, simple. If he chooses later in life to pick it up. Cool.

300+ people die every year driving cars.
I drive everyday.

Condolences to the family.

There have been some things over recent years deemed as sports that have come across as ridiculous. Dana White’s slapping competition seemed crazy when you don’t defend yourself and take the hardest slap the other guy can dish out. Seen some faces blow straight out that just seemed barbaric. Not sure how I view this one as it’s very much what you see on a league field. I wonder if women’s participation in contact sports is pushing males to keep pushing the boundaries to go further and further into testing their might?

Your talking points have no nuance.

Why do we have seatbelts? Why do we need a license to drive? Why do we have to have good vision to drive? are there drinking/smoking age limits? Why can't I drink and drive? Why can't I speed?

Why is there protection against hate speech? Why can't we just run it straight, talk it straight...why does this nanny state have to tell me I need to pay for wof/registration/license just so I can get from a to b ? (last one is sarcasm just in case anyone misses it)

Two people running at each other to best the other isn't inherently wrong. I love the UFC. As a kid I loved WWF/WWE. Both of these are professionals doing their trade. It's about making sure that people watching it know there are massive risks. Stupid adults are just that. Kids, especially teenage boys have this massively underdeveloped frontal cortex. It's why they eat tide pods, it's why they used to do things like 'chicken'. So as a society, we have to make sure these stupid boys (and some stupid girls) not be so stupid.

@WahsaurusRex mentioned about warning viewers about the inherent dangers. i.e. https://www.wwe.com/inside/overtheropes/pleasedonottrythisathome/announcement

More needs to be done.

Yeah agree it wouldnt stop CTE it but I think it would still minimise impact even if it’s only a small %

Headgears I’ve seen and used are totally crap. Literally gives you little protection. More could be done to invest in thicker padding and softening material if people are serious about the issue

Speaking of back in the day I remember when WWE was all the rave. There was one video that still buried in my memory where this guy jumps from the roof of his house. That video still haunts me as both of them did not look good after the collision. 🪦 RIP

Found it

So you’d agree that if “run it straight” is regulated. All good?

I believe they have weight divisions.

Player 1 ready
Player 2 ready
Ok, go……..

Medical staff on hand if accidents happen?

What members of the public do is kinda irrelevant. Regardless of what “inspired” them to do xyz…..

Again I ask….. If you can’t “run it straight” in this country. What can you do?

Errr. Anything you want. As long as you take responsibility for your actions and don't impinge on or hurt others with your actions.

Yeah, it would have to be really regulated. Every sport has regulations. I might not like the sport (power slap) but rules are there to protect participants.

Weight divisions would be part of it, medical history would have to be checked (heart conditions) etc. I would assume that a lot of people's medical insurance wouldn't cover these events.

These sort of new ‘sports’ are the future, just as x-games is eating into the Olympics.

We’re getting shorter attention spans, less recreational time, ‘rights’ are getting fragmented, etc.

Shorter, extreme events featuring the limits of human ability, cater to the younger generation. ‘Sports’ like this are just made tic tok!

It’s obviously very much a cast off of league and telling on the news where Warriors players say they’ve never heard of it as if advised to do so and the contrast of NZ rugby condemning it and Chiefs players warning against participating. I’m not sure it’ll ever be viewed as anything but thuggery? The box is open now and it’s obviously going to be performed whether it’s allowed to be viewed by public by the powers that be in a competitive format. Guess the players in the rugby league world endorsing it are the reason for rugby league being so coy on discussing it?

I'ts dumb.

We used to do it indoors for tackle practice as teenagers.

Damaged a few walls. Landed on the floor on ya head after being tipped upside down.

The problem I have with it is two fold.

One, kids will do this shit without encouragement, and if you social media viral that crap kids will go crazy.

The other problem is that we are starting to accept that our sport is dangerous. And our sport if you understand it is safest when you are physically conditioned for it.

Stuff like this is more likely to put more heat on our sport and well, one day our sport will be banned....lets not encourage an activity that speeds up that process eh.

People will do whatever they want, you don't need to encourage it with media events.

I am a rock fisherman or in fishing geek speak an LBG fisherman (land based game if you please).

Three dudes die a year eh. I have nearly died a few times, there are plenty of idiot activities like mine you can do if you want to die.

Nanny state is not stopping the half of the ways you can kill yourself in New Zealand.
