Sports Run It Straight

Imo a lot of us old school footy players learnt our tackling technique playing bull rush at school.
But that wasn’t running full bore into someone most of the time unless you hated the prick tackling lol.
Man some of these collisions are crazy, someone might get severely hurt soon.
This and the UFC Power Slap are the most brain dead thing you could do for men over 30.

Would love to see a different version where 1 on 1 you try to get round the opposition instead of running over them.

Imagine a speedster or big stepper taking on a super defender!

Would identify and highlight the best attacking player and best defenders across codes.

To be fair, you could have to take turns running at each other to get the best all round attacker and defender for the ultimate player.

Much better than a 1 vs 1 ‘prop’ type bulldozer contest.

I get it, but we allow sports where the objective is to beat your opponent unconscious
Some of them are built perfectly for it. It's just the risk factor in such a politically sanctioned time etc. Go for it. One guys response when asked what he plans to do with the money if he wins....

Gambling 😁

Can't for the life of me remember his name but back in the early 2000's young Warrior used to charge full on into the opposition until he got hit so hard he split his spleen.

Teen who died after private run it straight-style game identified

The 19-year-old who died after suffering a serious head injury during a private run it straight-style game has been identified.

Multiple sources have confirmed the teenager was Ryan Satterthwaite, who worked at Mainfreight Transport in Palmerston North.

Satterthwaite was critically injured playing a tackle game with friends in Palmerston North on Sunday, police said.

Manawatū Area Commander Inspector Ross Grantham said the teen suffered a serious head injury when tackled, and was taken to hospital by his friends.

“Tragically, he passed away in hospital on Monday night.“

Grantham said the young man’s death was “an absolute tragedy and my thoughts are with his family and friends”.

“The tackle game played by the group of friends was based on a social media-driven trend, where participants compete in full-contact collisions without protective gear. While this was an impromptu game among friends, not a planned event, this tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity.”

Grantham said police urged anyone thinking about taking part in a game or event like this to “consider the significant safety and injury risks”.

“While this is not a criminal matter, Police will continue to undertake enquiries on behalf of the Coroner,” he said.

A tribute from one of Satterthwaite’s friend online said “fly high in the high heaven my beautiful brother. Love you forever and always my boy. See you in the next chapter”.

Another friend said “rest in paradise my boy. Love you so much”.

The run it straight game originated overseas, through the Australian-based RUNIT competition.

The competition is built around actions seen in rugby union, rugby league, the NFL and AFL. Opposing individuals – a ball runner and a tackler – stand at each end of a 20m x 4m field, and run full speed at each other with the goal of trying to bowl each other over.

The RUNIT website lauds it as the “fiercest, new collision sport”.

Two RUNIT trials were held at Trusts Arena in West Auckland last week that saw one man's body convulse on the ground after being hit and another knocked out.

Two similar events called Run It Straight were expected to be held in Māngere and Mt Albert, but were cancelled after organisers failed to secure any permits, despite telling social media they were not allowed by “council” and “parliament.”

Stuff has approached the official RUNIT organisers for comment.

I don't have much of an issue with the events taking place personally. IMO it is the same as scrapping in the streets = dumb and you could die, UFC = awesome (also, you could die, but at least there are doctors around).

The only concerns I do have are that, despite a big cash prize, I doubt there is enough funding behind this for insurance on the participants and everything; I am sure they are signing their lives away every time, and then ACC is going to have to pick up the bill if one of these guys cant work for a while because they get busted up so bad?

The other is how many times are these dudes running at each other?? A UFC fighter fights a couple of times a year, maybe up to four if they are a maniac. If I had to guess, the more successful guys at these events are probably running at least 6+ times, and then less than a month later, doing it all over again? yeesh

Really sad to hear someone has died from this. You would think head gear and mouth guards at a minimum. Even shoulder / chest pads to protect you.

The collision looks even more dangerous than the NRL as both guys are running at full speed in one direction only into each other.
Headgear doesn't stop CTE though.

Comparing the event to UFC or boxing are way different. Some of it you've already mentioned. People on the street doing dumb stuff is just that but you're not finding two teenage mates going full tilt boxing each other unlike this event.

Boxing and UFC have been around long enough that people understand these are professionals. Runit is a bunch of Muppets running at each other, promoted by other Muppets who care only about their own wallet.

If original UFC was as popular as it is today, you would also see lots of kids dying, but they now have lots of rules and regulations.

I haven't looked yup research but I am sure there is correlation between very popular events/shows and children copying them i.e. wwe wrestling, power rangers, manu world champs. How many schools banned power rangers "play"?
