Social Off-season antics

I am thinking about getting a smoker and cooking meat for summer. Anyone tried a kamado joe or anything like that?
If its in your budget then Kamodo Joe is as good as it gets as far as charcoal is concerned. Depends what you get cause they go from $400 to $4000. Never had a bad brisket on a green egg. They are pricey though. I dont own one but have mates with one. I prefer offset smoking.

Plenty of tutorials on Youtube and some great NZ based low and slow groups on Facebook that are always helpful with tips. There are some differences in our meats and Americans so while America is the mecca for smoking not everything they do works well here ie trimming fat cap...

offset smokers rule but it’s super time consuming.

a few years ago, a got a traeger pellet smoker. you don’t get the charcoal and that more kinda fire smoke flavour but you do get a more subtle wood fired kinda smoke flavour, if that makes sense?
and it’s so clean to use and super easy since it’s all connected to your phone so you can change temperatures, turn it on/off/rest etc from anywhere which suits me because almost nothing you smoke is a quick job.

i also have one of those heston blumenthal or however you spell his name, that british nerd chef dude. i think it’s called a hub, charcoal rotisserie thing. it’s amazing. and so so good looking.

i did find that the more i cook the more my wife let’s me buy these things, which is great, BUT the more i cook, the more beer i drink.

I dont spend too much time cooking on the offset but its king of BBQ when I do. Really I'm just after the smoke ring and bark. After that I finish it off in the oven till it hits the right internal temperature then rest in a chilly bin for a couple hours. Can be a 12-18 hour process for a decent side of brisket. More likely to just do ribs for 4 hours then a brisket these days. It was great 15 years ago when there wasn't much interest in low and slow but since its blown up the price of brisket has gone through the roof. $30 cut is now $120+.

Also have a Weber with a rotisserie attachment. Good for any roasts. Look into pork burnt ends, pulled pork, chicken lollipops, can in a chicken... so many great meals you can make on it.

Read a lot about pellet smokers but I'm not looking to add another BBQ to the collection. The ease of use is definitely a bonus. Be careful of admitting to owning a pellet in front of some smokers. Purists like to lynch them in some groups lol.

Truth is you dont need any fancy gizmos. A steel grate across some cinder blocks burning wooden pallets was how I was raised. All the same at the end of the day...

Maybe we need a BBQ thread mods as I can see this one kicking on…

I’ve been low and slow BBQing for a few years now. Having lived in Texas for 4 years in the ‘00s I was lucky enough to sample some of the best BBQ around. My Californian mate from Santa Maria was also big on it with their style of BBQing too so learnt a lot.

These days I have a Weber Smokey Mountain (bullet shaped smoker) which is all I need as I don’t do cooks for large numbers of people but it’s big enough if we have friends over.

It’s pretty versatile and I’ve cooked all sorts on it. Got a brisket lined up for Friday, which is the first one in awhile.

I reckon you should spend about 100$ on a smoker

I've had one like this for 3 to 5 years , and for the amount you actually use it , it's worth it.
If you like having a 600$ piece of hardware outside collecting dust after the initial fad enthusiasm wares off.
the cheap one I got probably has a couple more years left in it. Then I might spend another 80$.

i looked at getting something like that to leave up at the farm.
drinking my way through my afternoon jobs while something’s smoking away sounds pretty sweet to me.
you just can’t beat real charcoal smoke flavour.

and for that price!
it’s less than the fucking brisket you put in it.

💨🥩😎🍺

With these cheaper ones you do have to keep more of an eye on them , but yeah totally worth it imo.

My second sport is Arm Wrestling. So next weekend is East V West.

And the main event is

This man (Denis Cyplenkov 41

of Russia) images (4) (10).jpeg

With hands the size of dinner plates
images (4) (8).jpeg

Vs Devon Larratt (48 - Canada, Ex Canadian Special Forces)

images (4) (9).jpeg

With the freakiest pronator muscle you'll ever see. images (4) (11).jpeg

Arm Wrestling is highly addictive once you watch a couple of matches.
They have some seriously funny characters in the sport. It's hella aggressive, Loud & entertaining!

From loud mouth, hilariously funny Travis Bagent(Whose son has signed with the Chicago Bears as a Quarter Back)
To John Brzenk The Goat of the sport. And still pulling competitively at the age of 59.

To the Georgian hulk Levan Saginashvili

There are plenty of characters in the sport to keep you entertained for the off season.

Me too love arm wrestling but haven’t been following of late

Devon is a beast

What about schoolboy?

It’s a pity the UFC chose face slapping as their extended sport and not arm wrestling

Arm wrestling absolutely blows that slapping nonsense

fucking wild, man.

School Boy is mid level compared to the monsters out there. He needs to change his nickname to Left School Boy, He is 26 now lol. But, He did bring alot of eyes to the sport. When he was school boy age he was wrecking grown men. And his channel blew up.

You should catch up on the events bro. It's an exciting time for Arm Wrestling. Most the tournaments are on YouTube now(East V west - King Of The Table - Arm Wars(Dark Card)
Some epic matches. The pre match smack talk is some of the best in any sport!(Especially Devon)

I would always recommend to newbies of the sport to watch Pulling John. It's about John Brzenk(The goat) and his rise in the sport in the 80s. He was small, looked like an accountant. And crushed the biggest dudes in the sport lol. The movie "Over the Top" starring Sylvester Stallone is based on John.

Then head over to Devon Larratt's YouTube channel and follow him. Or Engin Terzi is another channel.

Of course you'd know about Larratt.

Be cool to have someone to chat to on here about Arm Wrestling lol

Yeah, Not my cup of tea. Would love to see someone like Levan Saginashvili in a slap contest. The man is 400 pounds of Georgian muscle. With massive hands! He's pretty good on the boxing bag too. Fucking scary!

Still, Pass on that shit lol

Are you in the local arm wrestling scene?

A guy I used to go to school with and play league with posts a lot about arm wrestling matches.
I was pulling back in NZ. Not so much here. I'm getting old & my arthritis is being a right marnis. Can't even pull my shlong anymore.

Ps, Arm Wrestling has some of the most politically incorrect terminology of any sport

Pulling = Arm Wrestling.

Example - I feel like a pull. I pulled him off. Yeah mate, We pulled eachother & he beat my hand good.

Straps - A strap that binds the hands together on the table.
Example - A match starts, No straps and both men slip.
Ref will say "Ok, Lets get the strap-on. Bound together by a strap, Usually- Someone will say - Pull it harder. I want the strap harder.

Gripping up - Binding of the hands in the middle of the table.
Slipping - Disconnection of eachothers grip.

Example - He keeps slipping, I need the strap tighter. His grip is to hard. I feel like i can't bend him.

Along with the Aaawww Yeaahs and the ooooo yeahs. And the Here it comes. I'm coming!!

If you're Watching this on YouTube. And someone in another room can hear it.. They'll 100 percent think you're watching a bit of man on man porn.
