NRL NRL on Sky

the other benefit sky sports now is that you are able to use the app on different TVs / devices. So, I actually bought a chromecast to upgrade the TV in another part of the house and watch sky from that room. Or in the main lounge. So for that reason, it is a little more versatile than a wired topbox. You could even log in on another TV while on holiday (or take a chromecast with you).

Seems similar to WatchNRL which is available worldwide except Aus and NZ.

That Superleague+ is a bit shit for those in the UK. 120 games live on the service, but another 60 odd are only available live on Sky Sports and are delayed on superleague+. A number of fans would need to subscribe to both.

I seriously hope we never get a standalone NRL streaming service here. WatchNRL costs 44AUD a month and Skysportnow costs 49NZD a month.

I don't think it could ever go purely standalone streaming - but I'm fascinated where the business model will end up.

Streaming and ditching the traditional broadcasters has come up the last few times the broadcast deal has come up. It will come up more and more with each passing deal as streaming is now more common.

The NRL even looking at other broadcasters would be a good start. That gets a lot of media attention and they then go back to Fox and Channel 9.

Sport is a good seller as it provides a lot of content and it is live. How long will the big deals last with the traditional broadcasters? The market is changing.

I've seen reports of different sporting organisations signing with streaming organisations. Disney+ had the IPL at one point. That must have been restricted to India. A few days ago the WWE signed a huge deal to move their main show to Netflix.

I'm not sure how compelling our local Australasian competitions would be to the larger streaming platforms. I could be wrong and the AFL may have a deal already, I'm not familiar with their business. It might be a case of 1 or 2 streaming platforms go big on sport and we end up having to pay a lot more for our subscriptions.

On the flip side a lot of streaming services are struggling financially as they are still figuring out their business model.

So games will be delayed coverage
I read it that it will work like in Australia with Channel 9.

Start live but with ad breaks will progressively get behind the live coverage as the game goes on. It's been a while since I was in Australia or watched the CH9 feed so not sure if they just have ads during the breaks but it looks like in NZ we will start at the live time and get further behind as the game goes on.

I see skytv have announced a heap of sports that will be shown on sky open (formerly prime) including NRL and 9 Wahs games. They will start at the same time but have ads during the game so will on average finish 12 minutes later!
The Article I read says seven Warriors games.

Bit mean only having seven games out of twenty four games.

I guess it is like one long advertisement to sell SKY subs.

I was sure someone had posted the link to the article in this thread before but here it is anyway.
It seems they'll be only airing Friday night nrl games so guessing that's where the 7 warriors aired for free comes from.

Yep 24 Friday night 8pm games of which 7 involve the Warriors.
Plus one Anzac Day and one Magic round game (doesn't explicitly say the Warriors games on these days but one would assume)
Plus SOO 1

Still people complain 🙄

I always thought they must just cut away to a quick little insert in oz.

Was shocked when I lived there for a bit and watched ch 9 and Rabs did his we're going to a break schtick and it was a full on 3 minute break.

Any free to air exposure is a good thing for the game.

More kids watching, more kids playing.
Its a great move by Sky. Capitalising on the popularity of the Wahs. More revenue from advertisers....more eyes on the product and if people want premium they'll get a taste. Seems like a win/win. There is the danger that people might drop their subs, but the ads will be way too annoying for die hards!
